Why has this section's name been changed from Coronavirus to Covid?🧐

megletthesecond · 20/01/2022 19:12

I've been wondering this.

vodkaredbullgirl · 20/01/2022 19:14

Not really noticed, till now lol

the80sweregreat · 20/01/2022 19:16

Oh yes! Weird that
Maybe it's so the newer variants are now included too ?

rainrainraincamedowndowndown · 20/01/2022 19:20

Yeah, I find it odd too. It's weird, but Coronavirus sounds more serious and genuine, and Covid sounds somewhat mindless and deride for some reason.

Faircastle · 20/01/2022 19:21

"Covid" is the illness caused by any variant of SARS-CoV-2.

"Coronavirus" isn't really specific enough; there are lots of coronaviruses, not just the one causing this pandemic.

saltandpepper234 · 20/01/2022 19:36

It reflects how people talk about it in common parlance. When the pandemic started, people called it “Coronavirus” but over time people referred to it as “Covid-19” and eventually “Covid” stuck as the most common way of referring to it. Such is the way language evolves. ‘Rona autocorrected on my iphone the other day despite not having typed it before to my knowledge

Bobholll · 20/01/2022 21:30

There are hundreds of coronaviruses. This once is specifically called covid.

I don’t know anyone who calls it or refers to it as coronavirus anymore. Always covid. Occasionally ‘Rona.

dementedpixie · 20/01/2022 21:35

Its a coronavirus called covid 19. Shortened even further to covid

Inastatus · 20/01/2022 21:38

Why does it matter? It’s obviously the same subject.

PAFMO · 20/01/2022 21:39

I noticed that this morning.
Does Boris Johnson still say "cronavahrs" he used to do my head in back in the early days. Much as "Rona" does now.

EmmaH2022 · 20/01/2022 21:39

@Faircastle

This I would have called it Covid 19 initially.
JanglyBeads · 20/01/2022 21:59

I think it's too matey.
Covid-19 I could cope with....

HugeAckmansWife · 20/01/2022 22:01

Better than 'the rona' 🙄🙄🙄 Covid is more specific and shorter

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 20/01/2022 22:01

Covid-19 is the disease. SARSCoV-2 is the virus, a type of coronavirus.

Still says Coronavirus on the app.

LittleWingSoul · 20/01/2022 22:03

@saltandpepper234 My phone always tries to type covid in all caps and I have to tell it to shush and rewrite it in lower case every time! That'll learn ya, covid!

QueenOfHiraeth · 20/01/2022 22:05

I read that covid was an abbreviation of CO-rona VI-rus D-isease then add 19 for the year first identified
Coronavirus is the type of organism that causes the illness Covid-19

JanglyBeads · 20/01/2022 22:10

Says covid for me on app

TalkToTheHand123 · 20/01/2022 22:25

Natural reduction of a regularly used long word obvs.

Whichjab · 20/01/2022 22:28

@TalkToTheHand123

Natural reduction of a regularly used long word obvs.
Not really natural when the board had been coronavirus for years. Why change it now @MNHQ
OvaHere · 20/01/2022 22:44

It's probably about search engines and algorithms. If Covid is a more common or more searched term then you'll get better traffic to the website by using it.

Lilifer · 21/01/2022 00:33

@Inastatus

Why does it matter? It’s obviously the same subject.
I'm just wondering why it's changed now when it's been coronavirus from the start of all this. Seems a bit pointless to change it at this late stage of the day

@OvaHere has the answer I guess!

merrymelodies · 21/01/2022 07:12

I haven't heard Covid being called coronavirus since 2020.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 21/01/2022 07:26
