School wants an LFT done everyday

My DD's primary school are asking for children to be given a LFT everyday before school. Is this the norm in other schools?

They have never asked before so maybe something has tipped the scales. I've heard that half of her class is off but don't know if that is due to false positives or the children actually having covid.

Going to have fun getting the tests. My local pharmacy has had a notice on the door all week saying they are out. If all the kids test that is 1000 tests a week just at one school.

I’m guessing they are asking because HALF THE CLASS ARE OFF WITH COVID.

It's only 'excessive' if you don't care if your child passes it on to a vulnerable child or adult in the school.

My 5 year old does it reliably herself, 5 rotations in every nostril. Her friends the same. I'm glad I live in a community where people care about each other.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 21/01/2022 09:45

Good lucj with that. I work in the NHS and we are all having trouble getting any. We have to order a few at a time from the gov.org site and there are never any on there. I spend everyday worrying about where my next test is coming from.
Work doesn't provide them anymore.

I don’t care if my child passes it on, in the same way I didn’t care if my child “passed” on a common cold prior to 2020. It’s called being human. Viruses have been around since the dawn of time and this is no exception. So yes, testing my kids daily IS excessive.

Vulnerable people WERE around prior to 2020, and staff have the option to be boosted or alternatively to leave an environment whereby it’s highly likely you’ll catch covid.

Kids need an education and teachers aren’t chained to desks like their in some sort of life sentence.

You have NO idea about the community I reside in. What does your 5 year old want a medal? I work in mental health and I can tell you there’s plenty of 5 year olds who have been given extreme messages from their parents in regards to covid and now have a host of issues mainly anxiety and emerging OCD.

But you crack on making assumptions about your “caring” community. You are naive if you think all parents are testing on a daily basis and I don’t care how “naice” you believe your area to be.

Aimeehedge · 21/01/2022 13:58

This is gov guidance for contacts. Is there a case in her class? Better than being sent home surely? It protects the vulnerable children and families. One case has become 15 in dc class this week.

Last term someone’s child passed it to my child.I now have long Covid. I was so ill.

It’s nice to know you don’t care.

Looking over the thread I feel some people just post to be nasty and toady. Im out.

Thanks for the replies everyone. DP has managed to get some tests from his work. DD hates having it done but am bribing her with sweets.

I was interested in what other areas were like as since March 2020 all we have had from school is very occasional emails to say someone in the school community has tested positive and we would hear from track and trace if necessary. There haven't been any large notices of absences in her class until now.

Oh and I'm not sure where I got the lft false positives info from. I was sure that they weren't as effective as PCR tests but glad I'm wrong on that score. (I haven't used the LFT ones only PCR so this is still strangely new to me).

@Aimeehedge

No I don’t. So you’ve had a lingering cold and now you’re calling it “long covid”.

Again, nothing new.

That’s really bad. I’m in a secondary school we’ve got more boxes than we know what to do with them. Kids literally bin full unused boxes!

knittingaddict · 22/01/2022 07:53

Why would that many children be false positives? My grandson's class has at least 19 children at home with covid at the moment. He had symptoms and the lft was positive, confirmed by a pcr. Both grandsons have been tested everyday since and the one with covid has been consistently positive and the other consistently negative. The tests seem quite accurate to me.

Exactly. Why would anyone be surprised by this.
Kittyhelp · 22/01/2022 13:22

I work in a primary school. The last two weeks has been awful for cases. Out of 4 teachers in my year group 3 have had covid (I've been negative throughout, but I've had it already) parents were asked to lft their children every day for 7 days. We now have 10 kids who are positive, some asymptomatic. We wouldn't have known without this daily testing. We were closed down for 3 days because the case rates were so high. Back to semi normal on Monday, but it's not over yet. Who knows how the next few weeks will go.
