Do LFT pick up covid if the symptoms are gastro?

I’m a bit new to this as we’re in Aus and haven’t had many cases until recently.
My son has a stomach ache for the last couple of days, plus two or three bouts of diarrhoea as well, feels generally under the weather but no cough, fever, sneezing etc. His younger brother had it last week but milder, one upset stomach and then a few stomach aches.
I’ve done a home test on him and it was negative but I was wondering how good the tests are if they don’t have “typical” symptoms, or, if this is more likely to just be normal gastro bug.
Husband and I have no symptoms but I haven’t tested as it’s so hard to get the tests here.
I’m staying at home anyway as he’s not well but wondering if we all need to isolate.

So I guess my question is, if your children have had gastro symptoms as covid, did the home test pick it up?

Yes. My DS had stomach ache, headache and vomited too late afternoon, then developed a slight fever overnight. He then tested positive in the morning. Didn’t get the covid cough until about 3 days later, but that only lasted a couple of days.

@Paquerette was that a home test he tested positive on?

My friends daughter had this and the lateral tests did not pick up. She was confirmed positive for covid with a pcr.

Hmmm, I might have to take him for a test and insist on it. Annoyingly they only seem to be doing PCR tests for health care workers here at the moment and relying totally on RATs.

Yes. He was negative on a lateral on the Sunday evening (for school - no symptoms), started feeling ill Monday lunchtime, and tested positive on Tuesday morning with the line coming up immediately.

It does all seem to vary though. I know people who have had symptoms for a couple of days before testing positive on a lateral test.

Following with interest. Dd has covid right now, detected on lft with cold like symptoms, nothing stomach related with her though. She had it last month too.

DS has bad tummy all morning and wondering if it's covid. He and covid last month (as did. Dd now has it again as above ). If I pcr him, it could be just from the old infection so planning to use lft's this time to pick up if he's got it or not.

I may wait until until tomorrow as I found Dd was negative on lft on Sunday with cold symptoms but positive by Monday.

Well a friend has recommended another testing place that apparently will test with no drama so I’m going to take him there tomorrow.

Both my children have covid at the moment which was picked up on lateral flow tests. Their only symptoms were gastric.

PlantWitch · 19/01/2022 11:14

My DD had covid (picked up on lft) and only had tummy ache and a slight headache

Ozgirl75 · 19/01/2022 12:17

@CouldBeHere what symptoms did your children have?

If you are isolating anyway why do you need to test him? If they are only testing hcp it seems a waste?

CouldBeHere · 19/01/2022 12:45

@Ozgirl75 They were sick a few times.

There’s more of us than just him and me in our family. If one of us has it then we all need to isolate - those are the rules in Aus.
