Covid and sensitive teeth/gum pain

Thirstquenching · 18/01/2022 16:03

Hi just looking to see if anyone has experienced similar.

I had covid at the beginning of December. Lost my sense of taste and smell for a couple of weeks but other than that was just like a mild cold. Smell and taste are back but my mouth just doesn't feel right anymore.

All my teeth on the right hand side are suddenly sensitive and uncomfortable to eat on. I was just at the dentist in August so I know there is nothing wrong in that way. I get a scale and polish every 6 months and I clean my teeth twice a day and never felt something like this.

While I had covid and for 2 weeks after I had blisters on my tongue and it was very painful to eat. This has luckily passed but now left with sore teeth.

Just to add some food doesn't feel right anymore. To give an example chocolate tastes fine but has the texture of candle wax??

I know that people are reporting all sorts of odd things after covid/vaccine

Anyone?

Any possibility you're clenching/grinding your teeth? Or possible sinus issues?

Thirstquenching · 18/01/2022 18:55

I don't think I'm grinding my teeth, my jaw isn't sore. Suppose it could be a possibility. No sinus problems

Yes, my teeth were temporarily sensitive when I had Covid and again when I had my booster. I thought it was just a coincidence but maybe not. It’s settled down now.

Thirstquenching · 18/01/2022 19:48

shitenbollocks
How long did it last?

OP posts:
Shitenbollocks · 18/01/2022 19:55

Maybe a week when I had Covid and a couple of days after the booster x

StressyWoman · 19/01/2022 02:31

I’m going to the dentist on Thursday because I’ve got exactly the same problem, also on the right side! Initially I had a small blister on the roof of my mouth and the tooth near it hurt but that cleared up in a few days but I’ve had the sensitivity for nearly 3 weeks now.

2YearsOfWastedTime · 19/01/2022 02:34

Iv heard afew people say this OP

Thirstquenching · 19/01/2022 08:39

Mmm interesting! Actually covid for me wasn't too bad its all the bits and pieces I've had afterwards that are odd and lingering and funny enough all on my right hand side of my body

I went to the dentist at the beginning of January and she said I do have one loose filling which I'm going back at the end of the month to have replaced but she said their is nothing wrong with the other teeth I'm complaining about and nothing showing on the xrays I had taken in August.

I've swapped to a soft bristle brush and sensitive tooth paste for now. I don't know what else I can try. If its like any of the other odd after effects of covid I've found they disappeared within a few weeks. Also found nothing I did sped that up in any way

Thirstquenching · 01/02/2022 20:36

So had the filing replaced which has obviously made a difference to that one tooth but still getting sensitivity and an uncomfortable feeling while eating.

The dentist is at a loss she says there is nothing obvious to see and x rays back this up. She has however confirmed she has had a few patients mentioning tooth/mouth problems since covid.

Obviously there is no actual proof that this is an after effect of covid but could be something for others to look out for

I have it too, bottom teeth on the left. They feel sensitive when I eat or drink. I had covid 3 weeks ago, I didn't think it could be related! I also went to the dentist a couple of months ago for a check up and everything was fine

NYnewstart · 02/02/2022 23:57

My hair is currently sensitive on the scalp with covid, but teeth are fine!

Thirstquenching · 03/02/2022 18:48

I'm on about week 6 at the moment

Hi @Thirstquenching, I had Covid in March and am really suffering with sore teeth and gums now - on about week 5 of discomfort.

I've had one dentist suggest that a root canal is needed, but not on grounds of any physical signs on x-rays, purely based on my reports of pain. Since the pain is mostly in my gums and much worse after eating chewy/hard foods, I'm ignoring that advice for now!

Took myself to the hygienist in case she could help and she identified a lot of gum inflammation and said she's seen a few people suffering post-Covid. I'm using the interdental TePe brushes she recommended and Corsodyl mouthwash but it's still really painful.

I'm eating a lot of soups and smoothies to minimise the irritation. I've bought boil and bite mouth guards in case grinding was part of it. I'm really not seeing much improvement.

If anyone has any other thoughts I'd love to hear - and OP if yours has improved I'd love to hear a reassuring story!

Maudelsie · 06/01/2024 12:48

Just in case you see this, @Thirstquenching , I've had this exact thing since mild Covid at the end of October. At first I had actual toothache all over, but mostly left side. Like you, I'd been to the dentist just before the virus got me with no probs found. Now they're all really sensitive and sometimes my tongue feels 'weird'.
If you do read this, did yours eventually go? I'm on 9 weeks!! 😬😔

LongBeard · 06/01/2024 13:53

Mine was on lower left side. From the back molar to almost the front became very sensitive to cold and hot. Had to learn to drink differently. I'm on my 8th day of Covid.

JustanotherMNSlapperTwat · 06/01/2024 13:56

Is it all your teeth on one side stopping directly at the midline?

Have you been checked got trigeminal neuralgia?

Maudelsie · 06/01/2024 14:05

I haven't been checked for TN as not easy to get a face to face GP appt. I was prescribed pregabalin when I first reported it to doc but it didn't seem to do much plus atm pain is not bad, no paroxysms. All my teeth feel slightly ' jarred' ; both sides but left bite seems dominant. Going to dentist in Feb. Maybe she will shed light? Hope it's not TN, that is a horrible affliction

WoolyMammoth55 · 07/01/2024 21:48

Hi all, 18 months on from my last post and 21 months post COVID my teeth still bother me loads more than before.

The hygienist I've been seeing says my gums shrunk and have not returned to normal. It's making the gaps between the upper part of my molars bigger than they used to be and more food gets trapped at every meal. I'm using the TePe brushes after every meal because if I don't the discomfort is too much to function.

The gum inflammation has improved a lot but this dental new normal is rubbish - but have now given up hope of seeing any more improvement, since it's been so long...

Incidentally the hygienist I saw was MUCH more helpful and observant than the dentist - who wanted to root canal a healthy tooth because that drastic step was all he could think of that might be causing the pain! So my advice is not to do anything drastic too soon, if I'd listened I'd have spent £3000 and been in a worse place... 🙄

Maudelsie · 08/01/2024 09:20

@WoolyMammoth55 Thanks for the update. Interesting and disconcerting! At least you've seen some improvement. I'm using Corsodyl now but the pain is still there. Based on my reports of pain the GP suggested it might be trigeminal neuralgia which I sincerely hope it isn't. It definitely came on with the virus. Seeing dentist in February; my hygienist is very nice too but I can imagine that atm a scale would be excruciating!!

TeaWithASplashOfMilk · 08/01/2024 09:41

I have this regularly - sometime for most of the day, sometimes just a couple of hours, but not daily OP. Mine is on the left side - probably about 20 months now. The last four or five weeks it seems to have reduced in frequency, so keeping fingers crossed. My hearing has gone on the left side too, so may be related. Covid is a fucker. Hope it stops soon for you.
