What will trigger closure for school?

DDs year 2, aged 6.

This week alone I’ve had 4 close contact emails from school, last week we had 8.

There’s 3 classes per year and it’s getting a bit much. I have to work, and the constant emails is just too much, its constant, 2 or 3 or more times a day at the moment.

I am not blaming school, but this is our class/year groups second outbreak this academic year, they closed in November for 10 school days due to an outbreak in the class. Some of the poor children have had it 2 times (from talking to their parents, school have told me nothing) in 4 or 5 months. One poor girl has had it 4 times since September 2020 (her mum says she was fine the last 2 times, it was more like a tummy bug).

But it feels like they’re hanging on by a thread and I'm just waiting for the email or text to say they're closing to Year 2 again.

I am not scared of Covid, I am scared that yet again my DDs education will be distrupted. She didn’t cope with home learning in November or in January 2021 – she has some SN which means she can’t access home learning (not diagnosed until after the last lockdown) but she’s not eligible for a place while there’s an outbreak in her class or year.

It keeps going round. The year group has several sets of twins spread across the classes, as well as siblings in other year groups, so even though we’re back in class bubbles it’s not stopping it spreading.

I’m a single parent, if I wasn’t and didn’t need to work to keep a roof over our head I’d homeschool DD for sure.

Other year groups have it just as bad from what I can tell, I know Year 4 closed in October right before half term.

Weve been asked to LFT ours daily now, and a PCR for a long list of symptoms including tummy aches, headaches and sneezing.

Feels like a ticking time bomb.

@Aroundtheworldin80moves We're on daily tests due to the constant emails, it's distressing for DD. I honestly wish they'd just close the year group to hopefully stop the spread for awhile. We have 4 weeks until half term but I don't think we'll make it.

My school (single form entry) has half of year 6 out & the teacher & TA, all other classes have 2/3 out so far. We’re all testing daily.

JoyOrbison · 18/01/2022 12:19

It will be a last resort, esp as from day 5 you can return with 2 negatives, schools are finding referring in line with gov guidance to depts re rising cases are beingvtold to be rigorous with cleaningvetc and carry on...

Blubells · 18/01/2022 12:37

I really hope isolation rules are scrapped soon altogether, so that those children/staff only mildly or asymptomaticaly affected can continue to come into school.

Poor children.

TheHoptimist · 18/01/2022 12:39

For the school virtually nothing
For a class not having enough staff to have 1 per room

Bluebluemoon39 · 18/01/2022 12:43

They won't close unless absolutely necessary (ie no staff).

And so they shouldn't. This is why testing needs to stop ASAP.

Toanewstart22 · 18/01/2022 12:43

I had to check this wasn't a zombie thread!

Eve large SE town here and no even a whisper about any of the schools closing

Life ticking among very normally for most

Whyarewehardofthinking · 18/01/2022 12:47

The most we have got from PHE is having close contacts do daily LFTs and we've had 2 full year groups go for a PCR. In all cases we still have less than 40% participation. We did close a year group (Year 8) due to staffing.

PHE think we are managing well with more than 10% positive in each year group, highest being 21% currently.

Testing does not create covid.
PlantWitch · 18/01/2022 12:53

My DD is already off with covid and just had a message from school to say Year 2 is being deep cleaned so Im guessing its gone through the class. They really should update the guidance re: symptoms though headache and tummy pain is all DD had

Surely covid will spread more if people with covid continue to go into schools? Isn't that the point of testing, i.e. to stop people going into schools who have it and may pass it on?
rainrainraincamedowndowndown · 18/01/2022 13:02

Same here, asToanewstart22 states. Life is totally normal, no school closure ever except nation wide one since the start of pandemic. Kept expecting for it to start at my dc's school too, never happened so far. None of my dc's close friends had it either. It feels surreal.

Very lucky!

It’s rife in our schools again.

Exhausteddog · 18/01/2022 13:04

I think they will probably only close if there are sufficient staff .
There were over 70 cases in my DS year in November (out of 250) and they brought in extra measures but the school (including his year) remained open throughout.

Oblomov22 · 18/01/2022 13:06

I too had to check this wasn't a zombie thread. No school problems, barely any cases I know in any of the 10 schools near us.

Bluebluemoon39 · 18/01/2022 13:07

Who said it did? Confused

TooManyOutbreaks · 18/01/2022 13:08

Not a zombie thread, it's so awful doing daily tests at the moment.

DDs not had covid as far as I know but only a matter of time I think.

Just stop doing it then OP - there's no way I would subject my child to that, especially without symptoms. It madness.

Don't succumb to the pressure. There is no legal requirement to do it - you are not going to get fined or thrown in jail for not testing your dd.

Stop being a sheep.

Blubells · 18/01/2022 13:10

Surely covid will spread more if people with covid continue to go into schools?

Yes it may well for a while, but eventually the virus runs out of hosts to infect. The wave will come down eventually.

If children and teachers are well enough to go into school, they should imo. Obviously if they feel very I'll they should stay at home.

Blubells · 18/01/2022 13:11

Testing does not create covid

Who suggested it did?

bobsholi · 18/01/2022 13:14

I really don't think they'll close again. In our school of 570 we had over 150 off with covid and 23 members of staff off with it too. We stayed open.

TooManyOutbreaks · 18/01/2022 13:23

@Blubells In our school some of the staff and a lot of the children are now on their 2nd or 3rd time of having covid, as I said in my OP one girl in DDs class (whose also 6) has had it 4 times since September 2020.

Stop testing your child. There is no need to test daily. I will never again test my children, regardless of symptoms.
