Should we get PCR?

My child was poorly yesterday so off school. Negative left in morning then later tested positive on LFT.
So I did one too and mine is showing positive too now
Should we get a PCR too?
Are these accurate enough?
I've heard of people getting false positives before on LFTs

Does positive for covid on a lateral flow show up on your medical records? I would want it documented in case of Long Covid or other long term effects. Plus proof for HR at work if I needed longer than 10 days off work.

False positives on lft are pretty rare. False negative lft's are very common. I would say you definitely have it, given symptoms too! feel better soon 💕

You are supposed to get a PCR if you have symptoms (regardless of LFT result)
A PCR is not required after a positive LFT only if you are asymptomatic

No. You are supposed to get a pcr if you have symptoms rather than relying on a lateral flow test.

If you test positive on a LFT, you only need to confirm it with a pcr for the following reasons:
people who wish to claim the Test and Trace Support Payment. To claim the Test and Trace Support Payment, you must have tested positive for COVID-19 following a PCR test or an assisted LFD test.
People who have received an email or letter from the NHS because of a health condition that means they may be suitable for new COVID-19 treatments. This applies when they develop any COVID-19 symptoms, and they should use the PCR test kit that was sent to them in the post for this purpose. If they have not received a PCR test kit they can arrange to have a PCR test.
People who are taking LFD tests as part of research or surveillance programmes, and the programme asks them to take a follow-up PCR test.
People who have a positive day 2 LFD test result after they arrive in England.

You will notice “people who have covid symptoms” is not there.

purple is correct

the reason symptomatic should get pcr is because people with symptoms may get false negative on lft and having symptoms, its likely they could have covid and go out passing it round.

positive lft plus symptoms doesnt need pcr

Looneytune253 · 18/01/2022 20:18

You no longer need a PCR to confirm a positive LFT whether the child has symptoms or not they have a pos LFT so they have Covid. The fact they have symptoms makes it even more likely

claireymrsd · 18/01/2022 20:54

Ah ok, I stand corrected.

Bouledeneige · 18/01/2022 23:09

I thought the use of PCRs was being phased out and reserved for front line services and that LFTs suffice for the need to isolate.
