4yo 40 degree fever

Ds 4.5 tested positive for covid yesterday after being sent home from nursery. He was fine in the morning, lateral flow on Sunday negative along with the rest of us. (Lateral flow was advised in a message over the weekend as a positive case was confirmed in the nursery on Friday)

Picked him up and he had an awful cough and hoarse voice and crying with a sore head, he was shivering and they said they had taken his temp a few times throughout the day and it was always ok around 36 something but just before I picked him up it had gone to 39.0.

It's been the same since 3pm yesterday. Got it down to 38.4 at the lowest at 11 last night but he's just woke up and it's 40.0. I've given him calpol and done all the usual things you do with a fever but it's worrying me. He seems so delirious and lethargic he asked .. what are you doing here mummy? He's falling back asleep now and i'm lying with him.

Just wanted a moan really. I'm worried about how bad this has hit him, wondering when the fever will break, and really worried about my older ds who is 8 and my baby dd who is 8months catching this as it seems so awful.

Any advice on the fever is welcome, is it normal with covid? And how to get through isolation with 3 kids ...argh! I just said to dh yesterday we had been lucky to avoid covid so far!

Oft, I couldn't read and run, have 3 very much older teens these day so I understand the 3 under 5 vibe.

That temp is high isn't it and the confusion with it... I wonder if a call to out of hours at this time of the day would be of help?

Will your husband sort your other two children out whilst you look after the poorly one?

SpamIAm · 18/01/2022 05:30

I think I'd be seeking medical advice if his temperature is still high an hour after more meds, or if he's still confused and lethargic when he next wakes.

Are you giving ibuprofen as well? That always worked before for DD than paracetamol.

I hope he feels better soon OP.

blackcoffeenosleep · 18/01/2022 05:37

Thank you @LostForWords2021

Yes DH is a fab help. He's currently dealing with older ds who I think is coming down with symptoms now too, I can hear him coughing.

I think I will ring out of hours just for some advice as the nhs page online states to ring for advice if they are under 5 and you are worried about the fever which I am.

Older ds had a fever of just over 40 once when he had a gastro bug ages 3. We lived across the road from our gp at the time so rang for some advice and the receptionist panicked so much and told me to rush over with him asap as temp was so high that it now worries me so much when any of them get a bad fever. Anyway he was fine, the advice with him was just regular calpol and nurofen if he could keep it down, sips of water, ice lollies etc. He even projectile vomited right in the middle of the doctors office for good measure. Ah, memories!

DS (9) has just recovered from covid. His fever lasted 24 hours just a bit over, he did hit 40, but it didn't last for long

Thank you - yes we're alternating meds. Going to check his temp soon again but I will ring for advice. It's scary to see him so unwell so suddenly.

Thank you - hoping for the same here. We can deal with everything else and manage the other symptoms/make him comfortable but my boys seem to get a high fever when ill which makes them confused and vomit and everything! They dont get sick often but do seem to catch things worse than their peers when they do.

Hope your ds is feeling better now post covid.

3 under 8 here and all had covid over new year. They all had about 24h of the symptoms you describe, then were absolutely fine for the rest of it, maybe a little bit sleepier than normal but that’s it. Hope your DS picks up today.

ohdear99 · 18/01/2022 06:37

My 2 year old the same temp of 39 calpol didn't touch it so gave him nurophen then topped him up with calpol two hours later and that worked same for my 1 year old baby girl and 10 year old son. Once they had the nurophen it was under controll 2 year old had a temp for 4 days the baby only 24 hours and 10 year old on day 3 with high temps

quiteathome · 18/01/2022 07:55

I hope things are ok. I would call for medical advice for that. Hope you all have a speedy recovery.

blackcoffeenosleep · 18/01/2022 17:20

Thanks all. His temp eventually came down after about 2 hours but have kept up regular meds throughout the day today. His temp has stayed down at around 38ish but seems to be peaking again now and hes shivering again but actually feels boiling. Just had some calpol at 5.

I did ring for advice earlier and they echoed what I thought, regular paracetamol and ibuprofen, as much fluids as he will take. If the fever persists continuously for 5 days then seek more advice. And keep an eye on the others for symptoms.

So far the baby has no symptoms but older ds has a cough - still testing neg as are me and dh.

Hopefully its only ds and it passes quickly 🤞🏻

I had horrendous fevers when I had Covid. Rehydration drinks helped. If you can get them in to him. (Dialorlyte)

toddlerdanger · 18/01/2022 18:31

MY DD gets like this with just regular bugs. I dread to think how she'll react to covid. Sad

I hope your little one feels better very soon.

Bellybutton88 · 18/01/2022 20:42

Hi the fever often takes days to break and you are doing the right thing giving regular calpol/nurofen. As long as the fever is coming down after these meds; I think the meds take an hour to come into effect. Do you have an oximeter too to monitor his o2 levels? Hope your DC feels better soon.

Bobholll · 18/01/2022 20:51

@toddlerdanger - to be fair, covid IS just a regular bug to kids. Your DD is unlikely to react worse to covid than all the other childhood germs out there!

deaexmachina · 18/01/2022 21:03

DS had a fever for nearly 2 weeks with covid, it hit him really hard. A week in 111 sent us to A&E who sent us home to wait it out. Keep your DC hydrated hope they feel better soon.

I dont but I have considered having one anyway as the baby has had 2 bad bouts of bronchiolitis so far (only 8m) and the second time she was admitted as oxygen levels were low. Im worried she will get covid and be worse because of this history of colds going into her chest. I might get one off amazon now you've reminded me. Thanks

Ds has gone to sleep fine tonight and temp seemed ok before bed 37.9. Lowest its been since yesterday lunch time but Im aware it could be the medication is keeping it down. We will see how he is through the night.

I must say, I was one of those under the impression it would just be like a mild cold if the kids got it but so far (maybe ds has been unlucky) it's been a pretty rough ride. He can hardly talk, the cough is constant and horrendous, he is shivering and aching all over and has eaten nothing apart from a frozen frube since yesterday. Luckily hes ok with drinking water, i think that is soothing for his throat at least. It's awful and I just want him to get better now.

For some reason my children always hit the 40s when down with any normal bug or virus. But I found after my az jag I hit the 40s in temperature too.

I've been told for my dc to alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen 3 hours apart routinely to stop dips and peaks. Also to strip them down and only use a light covering like a sheet if they need it. We usually keep them in just pants or nappy until they hit 38° then they can be dressed again in light clothing.

I hope it's short lived and they are back to normal soon. Flowers

HairyScaryMonster · 18/01/2022 21:25

My 7yo got up to 39.8 and vomited from the fever, I empathise. It was bad for about 20 hours then went down. If it's any consolation, she started Thursday afternoon and was playing and totally fine yesterday.

My 5 year gets terrible fevers. But had no fever with Covid. Only had a cough and funny tastes.
