Testing 3yo?

3yo came home today from nursery with what looks like a cold- she says sore throat , there is no high temp and no cough but teacher said we should get her tested as there have been recent covid cases in her group.

If we can't stick the swab into her throat/nose (I'm sure she will make this impossible for us without us forcing which I really don't want to do) I guess do we just have to isolate? How long should we isolate her for (and do we need to isolate as a household)?

I’ve tested my children while they were on a deep sleep, middle of the night. Only slightly disturbed them.

If you are assuming she is positive and not able/willing to test then today is day 0 and she can come out of isolation on day 11. The rest of the family need to do LFT for 7 days.

BTW you only test the nose in children.

I’d also do the sleep thing (and have with my 4YO). You don’t actually need to go very deeply to get enough for a positive result (I’ve tested it on myself when positive) so just a swab around the nostril is better than nothing.

Oh wow thank you all so much for the tips re sleep testing and only in the nose. I'll try that.

I've been wondering how parents were managing to do it!

Of course as a preference we'd rather know than guess... (and not isolate if we don't have to!!) also if positive we can inform her nursery so they're aware.

Just do the nose if you can. The swab doesn't have to be thorough imo. We got positives from a a very quick short swab in the nose.

I know it's hard though...

Also, covid can be exactly like you explain. The government really need to update the symptom list. Many people do have any of them. For many people it's like a cold.

We all had it last month. None of us had a fever, slight cough but not persistent. We did get taste/smell change but it was days after testing positive!

Thank you again everyone. I did the test and it came out negative (I got the swab into the nose but not very far in so I hope it's correct!).

Good ol' Mumsnet. I would have never thought to do it while child is asleep!

I'm so glad I asked otherwise we'd be isolating!

Ah that’s good!

And to echo what others have said when it’s positive, you really don’t need to go digging all that deep!

My tests lit up like a Christmas tree when I was positive without going really far back.
