Is this it now? Covid on the way out?

Now that a lot of people are less scared, particularly vulnerable people who have had it and only suffered mild illness, generally the feeling seems to be that it's moving to endemic and people just want to get on with it. With isolation now being slashed to 5 days as well, is this the end of all the covid hysteria and restrictions? Or is it simply that omicron has peaked in London and nowhere else matters?

@ErinAoife

Wonder if I read newspaper correctly? Are they not talking about a new variant, a mix between delta and omicron which is this the case will be more deadly?
There's been some news stories, but no one seems to agree if it's actually real or not, and no signs of anything causing any problems or spreadung.

I hadn't heard of this, though cynically it can't be long before there's a new variant of concern. As per pp though, generally people don't seem worried and therefore aren't rigidly following guidance anymore - lots of people ending isolation after 5/6 days without doing follow up lfts for example. I think it would have to be a demonstrably serious variant to make the general public restrict their activities/lives again...

Newspaper yesterday said SAGE modelling had predicted another wave in early summer, but I would expect no-one is worried due to warmer weather etc. I expect it will mainly affect people who had their booster early and whose booster will wear off first (and the unvaccinated).
JCVI would rather throw vaccines away than top up the booster of those who had their boosters in September though...
So I guess that's that then.

They went back and tested the sample - looks like it was contamination at the testing lab.
amicissimma · 16/01/2022 16:13

"They have stopped testing though, so I don't think you can rely on the number of cases being reported."

The daily numbers of tests reported have been similar through December and January, apart from a small peak around New Year. Higher at the moment than in the autumn and early December, though. Certainly no sign that testing has stopped.

I believe it's been agreed that it was cross contamination in a lab.

What do you think about quarantine when travelling? Would this come to and end also?

My sister is getting married in our home country in July. I am self employed so I won't be paid for time off and with quarantine both sides I will need to take 3 weeks off of work.

All in I'll be looking at costs of over £5000 just to attend the wedding. It's just not doable and I'm gutted.

Are you living in the UK or elsewhere? There's no UK quarantine any more for fully vaccinated people. Not sure what other countries will decide to do.

It'll have to at some point. We are wealthy compared to most and I'm just not willing to go abroad and have all the faff of testing/quarantines or being forced to vaccinated your children. I'm prepared to holiday in this country until things get back to normal, and I know loads of people who feel this way.

Obviously at some point they will have to get people flying again.

Franklin12 · 16/01/2022 16:34

I do think travel will start. Some countries I.e South Africa are still asking for a negative PCR test which stops people choosing that country to be travel to. There are far easier options. It’s a shame as I have a friend from South Africa who says they are desperate for tourists as this is their peak time.

Of course there will be people who want the drama to continue but I think we are all seeing blue sky.

Still early days, mask wearing will be here for a while to come, COVID passports maybe and still need people to be careful, this is not over for a long time.

We didn’t have masks last summer and we won’t this summer, and probably not again after that. People are getting on with life normally now so no need for people to be careful either.

Doubt it.

You may want masks and restrictions to continue but as shown last summer in England as soon as everything was lifted most people didn't bother mask wearing. As mentioned in an earlier post pubs and restaurants are busy again which shows people aren't afraid to mingle up close.

I’ve no idea and neither does anyone else commenting on this thread.

Where are you living? Where I am practically no one is wearing a mask. Everyone who has covid likens it to a mild cold.

Sorry to break it to you but It's practically over and its likely things will be very normal this summer.

How is it early days? We are two years in and pandemics usually last two years.
zafferana · 16/01/2022 16:49

I bloody hope so!

But the doomsayers and the 'I haven't left my house since March 2020' brigade on MN won't give up that easily.

Leftbutcameback · 16/01/2022 16:53

I was out at the pub last night and although it seemed quiet (except for the music Hmm) I guess a Saturday in mid January might often be like that. Was great to see people I haven't seen for a while. Everyone was happy to be out.

Well the plague's been around for a few hundred. So it's early days, yes! In terms of the disease.

Leftbutcameback · 16/01/2022 16:57

But coronavirus aren't new and have also been around for years too. So not early days for them either. Just this particular variety.

User6397254 · 16/01/2022 17:00

A lot of people have stopped wearing masks now, people are getting weary of it

Leak today suggests that all measures are being scrapped apart from 5 day isolation after a positive test, and lateral flow tests to travel, as of 26 January.
That includes scrapping masks and covid passes.
