Exercise after covid

How long did you leave it before going back to your normal exercise plan? I’m a runner, about 20 miles per week, had Covid last week and was off work all week. Main acute symptoms lasted about 48 hours and then fatigue and brain fog rest of week. Out of isolation early next week. Can I start running again then?

I finished isolation on Sunday, I have done a few workout dvds and pump class at the gym this week and have felt fine. I'm planning on going to parkrun tomorrow morning, I'll take it easy but hoping I'll be fine.

I did a gentle, slow parkrun my first day of freedom, and continued to take it easy the first week. Short, walking recoveries. I ran to heartrate rather than pace.
Week 2, my cardio felt pretty normal again.

I carried on even when still positive throughout. Had cold symptoms but felt guilty for being quite sedentary whilst isolating. I lift weights but tried to lighten them up when had COVID. I had it mild though not too poorly just headache fatigue and sinus pain. My husband thinks I was crazy 🤷🏻‍♀️

I had it beginning of November. I spent the week after isolation ending, doing some gentle swimming/floating about in the pool, but was running again by the end of the week. I had a couple of dodgy runs where I was sick, and another randoms where I was beyond breathless, but otherwise it's been fine.

Thanks for the replies - sounds like I can make a gentle start next week then and listen to my body. I hate stopping exercise but having heard stories of long Covid and how horrible that is I want to be cautious.

I used to run, was training for a marathon before the pandemic, then it all sort of stopped. I was just slowly getting back into it at the end of last year and was up to about 10 miles a week, then got covid at chistmas. I am about to head out for my first very slow, very short run today. The thing that is bothering me most is Im still getting odd palpitations (which I also had for ages after my second vaccination) so Ill see how I go. Planning to just walk if I feel crap.

notacooldad · 15/01/2022 08:05

I'm still not right right. I was really poorly with covid from the beginning of September. I have lost all my fitness and stoll get very much out of breath doing practically anything. I have been back in the gym since end of November. I'm struggling with the classes I used to love eg spi ing, HIIT and circuit. I get tired on long walks which is a big part of our families ' thing'
I hate how its left me.

I think it’s best to be over cautious with Covid. Even a mild case. I’m a runner and did a bit of research. From what I read it’s best to wait at least a week after symptoms clear up. I waited 10 days. Then first week did 50% of usual mileage very slow and easy pace. With an eye on heart rate. If heart rate shot up I would just stop and walk.

I stupidly pushed it the second week and did a fast one and felt exhausted for days after so don’t do that! My theory is that even if you have a mild case there can still be some underlying inflammation in the body. So if you overdo it you can really set yourself back.

It’s frustrating but just listen to your body.

Delatron · 15/01/2022 10:28

Oh I felt sick after my run on Friday which was easy pace. I had a mild case of Omicron a month ago so it does do weird things to you!

Teenagetrouble · 15/01/2022 10:59

@Delatron yes I totally agree. I want to be super cautious because there are some unknowns still with this. I’d been running to heart rate before on my Garmin so know what my heart rate should be during an easy run. Will probably try some run/walk sessions early next week and see what my heart rate is like.

I am working back to exercise. Weight lifting has been challenging - sessions have not felt bad because my coach has made sure I'm doing stupidly low volume but I still get evil DOMS afterwards. Did a bit of high intensity cardio earlier in the week but monitored heart rate to make sure it was not spiking too high. That felt fine and did not wipe me out afterwards. I've had to take more rest days than usual but don't want to risk going backwards. It's very frustrating, though, as exercise is mainly what makes me feel good.

Teenagetrouble · 15/01/2022 18:32

@CovidCurious I know what you mean - I’m always super keen to get out running but don’t want to risk anything with this. I’ve actually had 2 weeks out now for various reasons which I’ve hardly ever done but don’t want to risk going back the way
