When do new 5 day rules start?

If someone is positive now, will they have to do 5 days (minimum) or the 7?

Only 5 days if negative lateral flow. Which is optimistic

pilates · 14/01/2022 20:40

I do hope so 🤞

Luuby86 · 14/01/2022 20:43

I tested positive this morning (absolutely no symptoms, just routine lfts due to work) the 119 helpline said that the new 5/6 day rule which starts on Monday will also apply to people testing positive now

And how many people do you think will stick to that? I'll go 20%. People have had enough now.
TheGriffle · 14/01/2022 20:50

I read it as all people currently isolating not just if you test positive from Monday. Dd is on day 2 of isolation so I’m hoping she gets to go to school the back end of next week if she gets negatives on day 5&6.

UneFoisAuChalet · 14/01/2022 20:54

My son is on day 7 and still has a strong positive. I’m fed up, he’s fed up but I feel we have a moral obligation to keep him home until he’s negative. But reading these threads make me feel that we’re in the minority …

WaystarRoycoCEO · 14/01/2022 21:05

I called 119 today and the lady I spoke to told me it only applies to people who tested positive from Monday, not to people who already were positive 🤷🏼‍♀️

Claireshh · 14/01/2022 21:31

I agree. It applies for people who test positive from Monday.

ticolac · 14/01/2022 21:38

I agree with Monday.
Not sure how many people will be negative on day 5. I’m on day 7 and got my first negative today. Yesterday’s positive line was as strong as the first one a week ago.

Mindymomo · 15/01/2022 08:04

@UneFoisAuChalet. Your Son can come out of isolation day 10, whether he is still testing positive or not, he will no longer be contagious.

I got told the same by 119 for my son?!

Why reading these threads? No one here has said they won’t stick the rules, just that they don’t think other people will do so. I didn’t get my first negative until day 7, I stayed in until my second negative on day 8
sheeplikessleep · 15/01/2022 08:27

I’m on day 4 (I think) as Tuesday was my first day of symptoms.

So tomorrow, Sunday is my day 5 … does that mean I need negative then and Monday to get out Monday?

Or do I test Monday (day 6) and Tuesday (day 7)?

… If I’m lucky enough to get a negative tomorrow … still feel tired and coughing but better than I felt. Confusing.

www.gov.uk/government/news/self-isolation-for-those-with-covid-19-can-end-after-five-full-days-following-two-negative-lfd-tests

You also have to keep isolating if you have a temperature.

And there are other guidelines.

The above link is interesting re the balance of risk v the economy. Basically a trade off between workers isolating making life difficult & transmission rates.

Those who leave self-isolation on or after day 6 are strongly advised to wear face coverings and limit close contact with other people in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces, work from home if they can do so and minimise contact with anyone who is at higher risk of severe illness if infected with COVID-19.

It only says 'from Mon 17th'. It's a bit ambiguous but tbh I think it's ok to go by the new rule, but everyone going by the new rule should really think about whether it's necessary to go out early and to take extra care/precautions if they do, because there is a greater risk of still passing it on than there is at 10 days.

Yes, if you test negative D5(Sun) and D6(Mon) you can go out Monday, but not if you have a temperature. Also you should wear a mask and distance yourself. The risk of you still transmitting the virus is higher than at 10 days (& 7) but they're trying to have fewer people off work isolating.

Personally, I'd only go out early for a walk or if my work place was really struggling with staff shortages and I could wear a mask & distance myself. I definitely wouldn't visit elderly/vulnerable people.

It's a balance of risk v the economy.

sheeplikessleep · 15/01/2022 08:53

Thank you JugglingJanuary. I think a lot also see first day of symptoms as day 1 rather than day 0, it’s unclear.

I WFH anyway so don’t need to go out, but being able to do the school run would help DH as he’s reorganised so much this week. I’m still very mindful I could be contagious so will avoid conversations and it’s outside. So it feels a balanced risk. No way would I see my parents or Gran or mix indoors for another week though. Though I’m lucky I don’t have to.

sheeplikessleep · 15/01/2022 08:54

Thanks for the link as well, that’s the most helpful I’ve seen.

This but about wearing a mask and avoiding crowded places really bothers me.

I am not currently positive but am daily testing as a close contact at school. My positive colleague is the person I was wondering about.
I'm a primary teacher, so no distancing / masks in the (crowded) classroom. We shall see what happens I suppose.

It's confusing and I really wish they would make the rule changes clearer.

Thanks everyone for your input.

We'll see how this goes.

It's great the isolation period being shortened for people no longer infectious but the messaging needs to be very clear and concise.
But the more complicated the rules are (if you have X do Y on day Z rather than everyone isolate for 10 days) the more difficult it becomes for everyone in society to follow them
