Post Covid ongoing cough.....

I tested positive on 13th Dec, and wasn't too unwell..... didn't help that I'd had my booster and flu jab about 3 days beforehand. I had the usual symptoms, and a nasty chesty cough that cleared fairly well..... but I've been left with permanent phlegm at the back of my throat and it's driving me mad. I can't sleep for coughing, even on raised pillows, and every time I swallow it's there. I keep being sick from the phlegm going into my stomach Sad

DH is threatening to murder me with the constant throat clearing, and GP was very dismissive saying it's "long covid" and get back to them if my symptoms are still there in 12 weeks.............

I don't have dairy as I'm intolerant to it.... am eating well.... and am getting really desperate. Has anyone else found a miracle cure???

Following with interest. I had covid in October and have this chronic phlegm problem. It will clear up for a fewdays only to come back again. It's draining the life out of me so I know how you feel.

Gargling warm salt water before bed helps a little and drinking plenty of fresh lemon, honey and ginger teas.

October Shock

I've read about the salt water, will see if that helps.

It's utterly miserable.

It really is miserable. I feel as though I will never truly be well again. Hope yours passes.

ginger is great for phlegm. I heard its indian name means "phlegm eater" although that could be a myth. Maybe eat or drink something with lots of fresh ginger in it!?

Spacecadetagain · 15/01/2022 00:22

I’ve had it for 18 months now 😩

PizzaDays · 15/01/2022 00:27

Oh noooooo

Yes, I also have the phlegm thing. I can feel where it is in my lung and can gradually loosen it and cough it up, only for it to return again quite soon after. My sinuses aren’t great either.

😯

There goes my hope of the summer helping it to properly clear off. I was hoping it was just the weather and my immune system being weak after covid.

Sorry, but your GP is right, this is classic long Covid. I have had constantly discharging sinuses ever since I was hospitalised with Covid 22 months ago.
The cough does get less frequent, and the fatigue and breathlessness slowly improve - I can now walk nearly 2 miles, up from 100 yards - but the endless swallowing of phlegm is unpleasant and a damn nuisance, particularly when trying to get to sleep.

BoodleBug51 · 15/01/2022 23:03

Gosh, it's really shocking that symptoms can go on for so long.

I managed a long walk in the frost today with dogs, but have paid for it since....... I'm absolutely exhausted, my legs ache and my lungs feel like they're burning tonight and I can't get my breath properly.

I feel really low with it and just want to be back to my usual self Sad and I'm really sorry that others are suffering too.

OP, you need to pace yourself to beat long Covid. If you overdo the exercise on one day, you trigger a relapse, and suffer fatigue and muscle pain for a few days afterwards.
Work out where your “sweet spot” is for walking at the moment. It might be anything from 100 yards to a couple of miles.
It’s the max you can do without having a relapse.
Stick within your limit for a few weeks, then try extending it by a little on just one day, followed by a rest day. If that goes ok, then you can take that as your new limit.
Always have one rest day a week, to aid recuperation.
It’s a long haul, there is no quick fix, but you will get there.

BoodleBug51 · 16/01/2022 09:37

I feel horrendous today, and feel really annoyed that I pushed myself yesterday..... I walked about 5 miles and it was too much. Certainly won't be making that mistake again in a hurry.

Very sensible advice, @Babdoc, thank you.
