Omicron and loss of smell

I have a cold at the moment, having caught it off my DD who works at a nursery so no doubt brought it home from there. I have done a lateral flow and its negative. My DDs lateral flows were all negative but due to having symptoms and her line of work she has done a PCR,

Myself and her boyfriend who lives with us have both now caught the cold, sneezing, runny nose, now partially blocked, sore throat, nauseus, clammy and sleeping all the time. Anyway my DD complained about the strong smell of Clove oil in my room (i had been using it in a diffusser to persuade spiders to vacate :) It was then I realised I couldnt smell a thing, I picked up the bottle of clove oil and inhaled it, but it smelt of literally nothing.

I then tried out my new perfume I got for christmas and again nothing. Now I know there are other bugs out there and it may or may not be Covid, it is going to get us all eventually, but what I wanted to ask is, whether lack of smell is a symptom of Omicron or was that just the old variants.

Anyway as I say I have done a LFT which was negative so it could just be a cold that has affected my sinuses.

Colds also block smell receptors if you have a stuffed nose. How's your taste?

WorstXmasEver · 13/01/2022 00:37

I realised I had covid when I noticed I couldn't smell anything just as you describe.

Keep testing as it's a big indicator.

Watch out for your sense of taste going. I couldn't taste anything except sweet things for a few days.

My covid was a very mild cold & I only tested positive for about 24 hours on lateral flows & my PCR & antibody tests confirmed I'd had it.

(I had Delta as this was in early October)

My daughter had covid just before Christmas and she lost her sense of smell.

I have no appetite but l have just have a drink of apple tango next to my bed as I am very thirsty. its cold and fizzy and has a slight tang but not the normal sharp flavour, so i can partially taste it.

The other symptom I had was a temperature of 32.4 which is abnormally low, I felt hot and clammy and sick, It was the day before I had developed the cold symptoms and I popped to the local shop to get some water, the shop is literally a 3 min walk from my home, but at one point I thought I was going to need to sit on a wall as came over really dizzy, I got in and my DD took my temperature as I was burning hot, was shocked it was so low, then she took her own temp and it was normal, retook mine and again 32.4 but after 5 mins resting and drinking the water it went back to 36.4 (I dont know if that is connected or not, but something in all my 56 years I have never experienced)

Anyway woke up at 3.30am with a sneezing fit, sore throat and nasuea and couldnt get back to sleep until 6am (my alarm went off an hour later) luckily i work from home, but I was so tired I fell asleep at midday, contacted my line manager to apologise as I literally shut my eyes for my lunch break and then it was 3pm. She was sympathetic and told me to take the rest of the afternoon off, so I then slept untill 10pm and now cant sleep as my throat is hurting, hence coming on here to chat

Thanks for responding and apologies for the long reply

The comment you make about only tasting sweet things makes sense, If you had blindfolded me and given me the apple tango I may assume it was mildly flavoured spring water, so it looks like it may be starting to go, and I have no interest in food.

I tested positive on Christmas day. Caught it off ds who tested positive on 20th. I assume it was omicron as lots of ds freinds also tested positive.
My main symtoms were nausea, blocked nose, sinus pain, back ache, fatigue and loss of apetite.
I also lost my sense of smell and taste for about 5 days.

You need a PCR test and to isolate until you get the result as you're showing one of the 3 main COVID symptoms. LFT's aren't enough in those circumstances.

Feather12 · 13/01/2022 07:10

I had covid way back before vaccines and never lost my sense of smell. I just got covid again and lost my sense of smell (for only about 3 days). I am guessing it was omicron, so yes, I would say loss of smell/taste is a symptom.

ScarlettSunset · 13/01/2022 07:11

Have you booked a PCR? Loss of sense of smell is still one of the symptoms to get a PCR for so it's best to make sure. I don't think it's a symptom of Omicron but other variants are still about.
It is quite possible that it's just a cold causing it though. I remember losing my sense of smell many years ago with a cold. It took a few days to return after I'd realised it had gone.

I lost my sense of smell with omicron. Tested positive on pcr on 19th December. Lost all sense of smell. Still no smell almost a month on!

Northernsoullover · 13/01/2022 19:35

Also if you are using a flowflex do your throat as well!

Ck2992 · 13/01/2022 20:30

I always lose my smell with a cold, I did with Covid too. I would be getting a pcr test if I were you though!

I lost my sense of taste and smell with the super cold back in October and then again with Covid over Christmas
