Re the downing Street party/bring a bottle/work conference.
If Boris didn't arrange it then who did.
Why hasn't he/her been named or have they and I've missed it.

OP posts:
CorrBlimeyGG · 12/01/2022 13:42

Martin Reynolds, the PMs private secretary.

SickAndTiredAgain · 12/01/2022 13:42

It’s in the leaked email, it was the Prime Minister’s principal private secretary.

tootiredtothink · 12/01/2022 13:42

It was Boris' private secretary, so very much from BJ.

He can't pretend he knew nothing about it or had no part in organising it.

Itsmeandhim · 12/01/2022 13:52

I can't believe that Boris thinks he can just ignore the unrest in the country over this.
Both him and his secretary should be prosecuted as members of the public were.
No wonder why the country is in ruins with these arrogant idiots in charge.

There is a minuscule chance that Boris asked his PPS to do something to say thanks/recognise the team and the PPS decided (or possibly delegated it to someone else who decided) to gather in the garden. So Boris could have said his instructions were misinterpreted.

However - he went to the party. That blows any possible excuse about ‘someone else organised it’. The fact that he stayed for 25 minutes also blows any possible excuse of ‘I immediately realised this was wrong and left, telling everyone to leave.’

A tiny but important part of my job is to consider the ‘optics’ of events we plan (or did plan back in the day!) in my organisation, to ensure that they are appropriate and not insensitive to any colleagues or business activities that are happening - and to raise an issue if I thought it was. I simply cannot believe that there was no-one AT ALL in the entire ubuilding/aware of the invite who didn’t say ‘errrr, guys? This is a terrible idea’.

So to sum up - pretty much everyone involved (attendees/people who were aware and did nothing/the PM should resign as it’s an utter disgrace.

Rant over. 😕

Charliesgotachocolatefactory · 12/01/2022 13:59

AND (rant not over, sorry!) the fact that the law was broken should be addressed too. I’d like to see a nice double page spread in a newspaper or a feature in the Six o’clock news, listing all the people who have already been fined for illegal gatherings in order to focus the Met’s mind on what they should be doing about all this. Or do they need to wait for Sue too?

TheChip · 12/01/2022 14:00

What I dont understand is how serious they wanted us to take it all. How serious they said it was, and yet they didn't follow their own laws and rules throughout the whole thing.

Surely, with the details they had/have, they'd of known the true extent, especially compared to the general public, of what we were facing. Yet their actions have repeatedly shown that there was nothing to worry about.

Thats not me saying that has been the case. Its just their actions have not followed the things they have said and I dont understand why.

InCahootswithOrwell · 12/01/2022 14:11

Because they don’t believe the rules apply to them, TheChip. It has nothing to do with what they thought the consequences for the pandemic would be.

This didn’t start with the parties and isn’t limited to the parties and he’ll carry on doing it. Boris’s problem here is that unlike the other times they’ve broken the law, this has struck a chord with the public because it’s personal. They did do the right thing, often at great personal cost while the PM didn’t give a damn about the little people as long as he was fine.

PurpleDaisies · 12/01/2022 14:13

Have you really not looked at the most basic details of the story? It was an email sent by Martin Reynolds. It has been reported everywhere, Confused

But there WERE people saying 'err this is a terrible idea'. They still went ahead anyway. There is absolutely no excuse.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/jan/10/email-shows-boris-johnsons-official-invited-no-10-staff-to-lockdown-byob-party

“Um. Why is Martin encouraging a mass gathering in the garden?” one staffer said, according to the BBC. Another asked: “Is this for real?”

Charliesgotachocolatefactory · 12/01/2022 14:30

Oh, I hadn’t seen that @theemperorhasnoclothes. That just makes it even more inexcusable.

The next question has to be ‘how many more?’. Because there’s no way this was the only gathering like this, over an above the other events we already know about. If you think you have a loophole, or you have a garden you think no-one else can see or - most likely at this point - you simply don’t give a shit, you’re just going to be gathering there all the time. Just because you can. Fuckers.

lljkk · 12/01/2022 15:55

The Civil Servants screwed up.
I think they were giddy with excitement of new baby in the building, boss had survived Rona, knowing that many in the civil service are underpaid/overworked and wanted a release.

I'm finding it interesting that the politicians haven't thrown the Civil Servants to the wolves.

the80sweregreat · 12/01/2022 17:23

The other politicians and probably a few top brass from the Met were probably at a few parties there previously too. They can't sack these civil servants or Martin Reynolds because they may then talk?
It's only speculation on my part , but nothing would surprise me about this shower to be honest , there is probably more going on , or went on, than just this.
I did think today though how quickly Allegra had to resign last year when all that came out. If she had been an Alan instead , she probably would have kept her job I bet.

Anyone would think the civil servants know about more lockdown parties.

The BBC have been reporting that there were several people who did raise concerns. There is an email that asks "is this for real" for example. In addition Cummings says he raised concerns. I wouldn't trust Cummings further than I could see on a dark foggy night in Barnard Castle, but he probably has evidence to back up his assertion.
theemperorhasnoclothes · 12/01/2022 18:08

The people who are underpaid and overworked in the civil service I'm sure weren't invited.

I wonder what the salary of Martin Reynolds is? I'm betting it's at least 6 figures.

the80sweregreat · 12/01/2022 18:20

This Martin Reynolds man might be on six figures of tax payers money , but he is obviously thick as shit.

I agree with this, it makes me think what did they know we still don't? Everyone I knew followed the rules and the streets were empty and most people were taking precautions standing away from each other. Meanwhile the Tories are getting pissed together. Is it any wonder conspiracy theories are saying certain people got the vaccine early on and possibly a different vaccine. I just don't get the mentality of anyone attending that who had family and would be willing to risk their families lives unless they knew something we don't as back then most people were very cautious
MadeForThis · 12/01/2022 18:25

Just waiting to see what the next revelation is.

VikingOnTheFridge · 12/01/2022 18:30

@MadeForThis

Just waiting to see what the next revelation is.
I'm actually excited.
TheChip · 12/01/2022 18:30

The general public were encouraged to call police on their neighbours for having more than 5 people in their homes. They encouraged shaming of people who broke the rules.

We could go for a walk but we couldn't sit 😂 honest to god

TheChip · 12/01/2022 18:31

I bet they were having a right laugh at their parties. The bastards

the80sweregreat · 12/01/2022 18:33

Yeah, come on Dominic or someone .. where's the photos ?? We need a bit more evidence before it all goes off the boil

the80sweregreat · 12/01/2022 18:40

They taped up the benches at our local park with the kind of tape you might see at crime scenes !
.. #mugged off , big time.
The conspiracy theory people are loving all this too.
It gives them even more ammunition.
It's done so much damage.

DuggeeHugPlease · 12/01/2022 22:02

I really hope this doesn't all blow over and they actually are held accountable.

I remember having to explain to my then 3 year old why the playgrounds were chained shut and we could only speak to nanny and grandad in their front garden (not the back for some inexplicable reason) Also why we had to cancel her much looked forward to birthday party planned for just 10 friends all the while they were inviting 100 people for drinks.

And I count myself very lucky as the hardships we suffered were very small in comparison to those who lost loved ones / lived alone.
