Elective c sections

Anyone planning an elective soon?

My husband is worried that electives will be cancelled because they may fall under the 'non-essential' umbrella?

My midwife hasn't mentioned this is a possibility, surely they won't cancel electives?

Can anyone help?

Of course they won't be! I had a c section at the height of lockdown. Your husband is being silly. The bigger fight will be because some trusts are underfunded and will try and talk you out of having one. But it's your maternal right, so you may just have to be ready to argue for your request.

Drunkpanda · 09/01/2022 16:54

Would they just leave babies in there then?
Elective does not mean optional!

Topseyt · 09/01/2022 17:00

Of course they won't. Electives can still be urgent. A pregnancy has to end at a given point, and as safely as possible. They can't just leave the baby inside you.

Outlyingtrout · 09/01/2022 17:03

No I very much doubt it. It's my understanding that maternity and paediatric services are ringfenced.

FelicityBob · 09/01/2022 17:07

Of course they’re not cancelled

WheelieBinPrincess · 09/01/2022 17:09

What does he know about it?

Sure if they’d left my breech baby in and cancelled my ELCS he’d have got the memo and turned round all by himself to save the NHS a job.

bonetiredwithtwins · 09/01/2022 17:11

They won't be cancelled of course but you may find yourself well down the priority list especially with high numbers of staff off sick and emergencies taking precedence and worst case may go into Labour naturally

Breech isn't really an elective c section anymore it's medical need - it's more elective to try and give birth naturally with a breech baby

WheelieBinPrincess · 09/01/2022 17:15

@bonetiredwithtwins they called it an ELCS when I ‘opted’ for it because I’d refused the manual turning.

Rrrob · 09/01/2022 17:20

I think if the hospital are short staffed it will depend on the reason and how necessary the c section is over a vaginal birth. The baby can’t stay in forever but you may get bumped for higher risk or emcs.

Drunkpanda · 09/01/2022 17:28

People don't always understand what "elective" surgery actually means.

ACatCalledLola · 09/01/2022 17:45

It won’t be cancelled. I had one at the height of the second lockdown when everything was cancelled. You need good reasons for an elective so even if the name suggests an element of choice it’s not that clear cut as in most cases there is a medical reason. The baby has to come out and yours and the baby’s safety are the priority.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 09/01/2022 17:54

I'm due in a few weeks and hoping for an ELCS. Haven't been able to speak to anyone about it as can't get in to see a midwife.
I was sent in a couple of days ago as an emergency and left 7hrs later unseen by the doctor/consultant. There were no beds at all on the maternity ward and women were being told they needed to be induced or to have a CS asap but that they would have to go home and wait for a bed to become available. I'm dreading having to go in as it seems a complete shit show.

KiloWhat · 09/01/2022 18:10

No they have to get the baby out somehow.

He doesn't. Hence I'm asking.

Sometimes it's so aggressive here.

Thanks for all your replies

I’m not being aggressive Hmm

I’m just not sure why your husband is putting the willies up you about the possible cancellation of a medical procedure, when he doesn’t know anything about it.

Your midwife would be the best person to ask.
