2nd vaccine for 12-15 Yr olds

neveradullmoment99 · 09/01/2022 10:04

I'm struggling with this. My children have had the first one. Should they get the 2nd? Especially since omicron is milder. Not much is being said about the 2nd jab.
Just wondering about risk/benefit.
I know that with the 2nd jab, there is a slightly higher risk of myocarditis, esp in boys. Have your children had the 2nd vaccine ( without underling health conditions)
Thanks!

Yes, both of mine will have it as soon as they're each eligible. The 12 week gap is precisely to reduce the risk of vaccine induced myocarditis, and given the community prevalence of omicron the risk of myocarditis from natural infection is vastly higher.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/01/2022 10:13

DS (13, non underlying health conditions) had his on 23 Dec. He was a bit tired for a couple of days, but no other side effects so far.

milkysmum · 09/01/2022 10:19

Yes my 12 year old dd had her second dose last week ( booked in online at local centre). She has told me most of her friends at school that had the first dose have either had the second dose or have it booked in )

Watapalava · 09/01/2022 10:32

You will need it for travel as most countries only allow double vax in now - testing like last year isnt allowed

frozendaisy · 09/01/2022 10:34

Can you post a link of the increased risk of the second jab from a reputable source please. We are about to book in 2nd jab so would be good to read beforehand. Thanks.

Sonex · 09/01/2022 10:34

I have three boys in this age group who have all had both jabs and no noticeable side effects whatsoever apart from a mildly sore arm. Isn't the myocarditis, if it does happen, short lived and self resolving?

pixels123 · 09/01/2022 10:35

Both mine 14dd 12ds had the second jag on Hogmanay. Dd had no reaction at all, Ds had a sore arm for 2 days.

autumnboys · 09/01/2022 10:37

DS12 had his second jab on 2 Jan. sore arm for a couple of days, that was it.

neveradullmoment99 · 09/01/2022 18:09

They had theirs in a drop in this morning! Thank you so much for your positive stories.
@frozendaisy I am sure it was on the government website. There were tons of details on there.
Tbh, they had the first one and seemed to escape any covid despite friends testing positive and people at school.

You will find info on here and research from the JCVI that there are links to.

Great that they’ve been jabbed OP - side effects seem to be very rare for the second jabs and they’ll be well protected now.

My DD got her second just before Christmas and I’m pleased now she’s back at school - most of her class/year have had theirs also so it bodes well for less disruption this term!

rainrainraincamedowndowndown · 09/01/2022 18:28

My dc is booked for next week. I saw this today, it's a good reason to get teens vaccinated.

with almost daily developments in how the medical community voice their concerns about this, please do your research first!! Only yesterday news came about an open letter sent to the JCVI urging them to review the current vaccination programme for children based on data from the last three months. The letter was signed by up to 15 eminent medical professionals practising in the most well-regarded UK hospitals (Great Ormond Street included) + a great number of MPs.
Schnitzelvcrum · 09/01/2022 21:02

We held off having any for our teens and glad we did. There's no rush OP. Do more research (not mumsnet), give yourself time.

Watapalava · 09/01/2022 21:11

There is a rush if teens want to do anything needing covid proof

We can’t travel now til after Easter as teens now need both vax and can’t be admitted with test

It’s a real pain

dementedpixie · 09/01/2022 21:14

My ds got his 2nd one today. OK so far

ZippyZap · 09/01/2022 21:17

Anyone know anything more about if they are OK to exercise and do sports as usual after the vaccinations? Last time they had it just before half term so my son didn't do any sports but his 2nd is due next week and I'm worried about him doing pe etc?

Unanananana · 09/01/2022 21:18

DD had her 2nd jab on 27th when I got mine. I took her and her letter with me and they jabbed her there and then.
We both had a bit of a headache but nothing else.

I think I read that the risk is in boys more and that maybe lay of the exercise. Mine were the same, it was a holiday last time. You could write a note for them saying they are not up to it?

I'm not sure if there is any link.

The "open letter" referenced by @perfectSmiles3 was published in Toby Young's gutter publication The Daily Sceptic and is a virtual carbon copy of the letter sent by the anti-vax and very dubious HART group last Autumn. In an attempt to grasp back some of the (already negligible) credibility the HART group has, the letter has this time not included some of the more dodgy signatures from the first time around.
It's pure anti-vax propaganda.
The poster spamming this letter across the boards is also an anti-vaxxer who will tell you these people are doctors.
Doesn't mean they don't have links to very dodgy and potentially dangerous groups.

Anyone with teen girls who have had the vaccine? Has it affected periods? We have not yet had our 13 and 15 year old daughters vaccinated, but are thinking of doing so for travel reasons. My period was delayed for nearly three months after the vaccine. My youngest has only just had her first ever period.

Wakemeuuuup · 10/01/2022 17:24

My 15 yr old has just had his 2nd jab. Very relieved as it's rampant in our area

No changes to periods here. My two had their 2nd dose weeks ago (end of November)

My daughter has had 2 doses and will have booster this coming Saturday. No period disruption so far.

DS became eligible for his second dose on 5 January. Which was the same day that his GCSE mocks started. Since I have no clue what random decisions the government might make about GSCEs (hopefully ‘real’ exams, but no guarantee that it won’t be teacher-assessed grades based on these exams), I decided that I couldn’t risk getting him his second vaccination until they were over. So he’ll have it next weekend (assuming he doesn’t contract covid in the meantime).
