Long Covid

For those that have it, or think they have it, what are your symptoms and have you been ‘officially’ diagnosed?

I had Covid at start of December and have been suffering with mild but unnerving heart issues since. Now my kids are back at school I’m busy with school run, club pick ups etc… and I’m getting really fatigued. Waiting on investigations for my heart but don’t want to bother GP re fatigue and not sure they’d be bothered anyway!
I’m really interested to hear from others with ongoing symptoms; have you been to the GP, how do you test for long covid, do the GP’s care?!
I’m feeling a little helpless tbh as I’m just not my normal self and I want to be.

has the gpsaid its actually long covid?

CorrBlimeyGG · 06/01/2022 16:06

It's not unusual to have fatigue a month after a virus, and you're still managing to do a great deal. People with post viral fatigue can be bed bound for weeks at a time.

Tr0ubled · 06/01/2022 16:10

Nope, not even had a discussion about it, and not self diagnosing that’s what I have but I don’t feel right. They’ve referred me for the heart issues though and said they’re seeing lots of people with similar problems post covid.

thats what a virus does though...same with flu

but we dont really call this 'long flu'...and it could also just be a coincidence. I have found medical staff to be quite responsible and have not officially said/hinted/linked covid to anything!

odd your medical teams are saying that...unless thats been misinterpreted

Awakened22 · 06/01/2022 16:36

I think I read that they won’t diagnose long Covid until after 12 weeks as anything before that could just be “normal” post viral fatigue.

Hope you feel better soon and get as much rest as you can.

Tr0ubled · 06/01/2022 16:46

Thankyou.

No they don’t call it long flu, they call it post viral fatigue, ME and chronic fatigue syndrome etc. I thought that was quite well known about but maybe I’m wrong? (Incidentally, they don’t call it “long flu” as ME/CFS/fibromyalgia/polymyalgia weren’t known to be connected to viral infections for quite some time, and often dismissed by doctors as “psychosomatic” “in your head” “mental illness” much like long covid is dismissed on here.

Also, I’ve recently seen a lung specialist. Not due to covid, but on discussing palpitations and shortness of breath, he mentioned that they’ve seen a lot of similar symptoms recently in people who’d had covid. So no, not really odd that her medical team had said that. In my case it was phrased as “many patients with your symptoms have previously tested positive for covid. Have you tested positive or had symptoms in the last year?” It’s called establishing a medical history.

@Tr0ubled I’m sorry that you’ve had so many dismissive posts. Ds had covid and long covid, our gp was really helpful and ran blood tests, ecgs, organised scans and referred him to a cardiac consultant.

It’s definitely worth talking to your Gp about, especially the heart issues to see what they say and what help they can give you. You should for heart changes after any virus and I’m sorry that people have minimised it here because it’s covid and not flu. I hope your Gp is helpful and you can get back to normal as soon as possible Flowers

phlebasconsidered · 06/01/2022 17:13

I've been left with lung issues and joint problems. I was regularly running 10km before covid but now I can't. I'm on daily steroids now. It also left me with ongoing kidney issues. I am referred to hospital but i'm not holding my breath.

BewareTheLibrarians · 06/01/2022 17:26

Sorry op just realised you’re already waiting for investigation for your heart which is good! In terms of the fatigue, the gp couldn’t help much, apart from just recommending more rest than usual, which isn’t the easiest with kids! Can you get any help with the school runs or club pickups for a few weeks? Just try and cut back as much as possible so you can get some more rest, otherwise the fatigue will drag in longer, and that’s no fun!

Firstshoes · 06/01/2022 17:51

Lung issues ongoing for 6 months so far but slowly improving. Terrible shortness of breath and 'air hunger', coughing, wheezing and still no smell Sad

Mickarooni · 06/01/2022 17:57

Out of interest, I’ve heard a lot of people say they’ve had lung issues since Covid but not really expanding on the type of it. Do you mean lung scarring or damage or abnormal lung function? Or breathlessness etc but not yet had any tests..?

Firstshoes · 06/01/2022 18:15

Mine is productive cough, wheeze, terrible breathlessness. I've had bloods, chest xray and lung function tests. These tests have shown inflammation

Tr0ubled · 06/01/2022 21:02

@BewareTheLibrarians thank you very much for your informed and kind response. I’m sorry your DS is suffering, and also sorry to hear about your own medical issues. Interestingly my heart issues are identical to yours, along with a pounding pulse, and on having my first ECG the nurses words were that they were seeing a lot of post covid patients.

I'm officially a long covid patient. I was hospitalised in August for 11 days with covid and pneumonia. I now have to attend a long covid clinic. Long covid is diagnosed 12 weeks after having covid if symptoms still exist. The consultant said my lungs are scarred and I'm waiting for another CT scan and lung function test. I'm also seeing a physio who is teaching me how to breathe properly again. I get very breathless and the fatigue is horrible. Also my hair is falling out and everything is making me miserable

kissmelittleass · 07/01/2022 00:52

I've had migraines ever since what my doctor says was covid back in late January 2020 so before testing or much was known, I was so ill and had a three day severe headache with pressure over my eye my sight went extremely blurry and ever since I get headaches that last 2-43 days when they come on always one sided so probably migraine my ophthalmologist said.

kissmelittleass · 07/01/2022 00:53

2-3 days!!! Not 43 now that would be hell on earth!!!

Tr0ubled · 07/01/2022 08:09

@kissmelittleass hell indeed but 2-3 days also pretty horrific, sorry you are suffering. I had extreme headaches during covid and my eyesight was awful. Headaches thank goodness disappeared but my eyesight is still worse than pre covid.

@Bubbublish I’m so sorry you are having such an awful recovery; it sounds as though you really do have the worst of it.
Sending hugs and hope you start to feel better soon.

I’m sorry to hear this, take good care Flowers
WhatHaveIFound · 07/01/2022 09:21

Sorry to hear you're suffering Tr0ubled.

I don't have Long Covid but my son does. It took over 6 months (numerous telephone calls plus two f2f appointments) for my DS to be referred to the LC clinic.

During that time the doctor ruled out everything else it could possibly be with blood tests and a rheumatologist consultation. He also had blood tests, an ecg and finally a chest xray last month.

However when he saw the physio & OT they both said he had classic LC symptoms on his first appointment, presumably because they have more experience of it.

So 13 months later and he'll finally get a face to face appointment this month. He suffers from chronic fatigue, joint pain, breathlessness and palpitations.

This week has been a struggle since he's back at school. The cold early mornings are taking their toll so i'm glad it's been only 3 days.

The only advice I can give is to try and get as much help as you can with the school runs so that you can rest. We centainly notice it on the days that DS has tried to power on through and a short walk in the holidays wiped him out for 3 days.
