Me & DH tested positive. How will kids get to school?

Hi,

My DH tested positive on Monday and since then I've been doing all the school and club rounds etc. Kids are aged 12, 10 & 5. They all go to different schools.

I tested positive just now and have no idea how I'm going to get the kids to school tomorrow (they are allowed to go in if they test negative on the lateral flow test every morning).

Me and DH have always done all the runs ourself and all the schools are quite a distance away. What can I do? Have schools been understanding about this? Also would it be awkward to ask another parents to take them especially as we both have Covid?

Can the ten and twelve year old not get themselves in? Then you just keep the five year old at home?

Meadowblossom · 05/01/2022 22:09

You could ask other parents to take them if they aren’t testing positive.

HelloDulling · 05/01/2022 22:10

Yes. 12 and 10 can be dropped by car (if you have a car), keep the little one home.

Asvan · 05/01/2022 22:10

12 year old will most likely have to get the bus but the 10 year olds school is quite a distance away and I'd feel uncomfortable making him go on his own on the bus as he has never travelled anywhere by himself before.

I would drop them in the car but they sit in the back wearing masks with ventilation. 5 year old I would keep at home.

This happened to us last summer. 7yo DTs did remote work set by the school.

Frazzled2207 · 05/01/2022 22:18

I’d drop them in the car. Technically this isn’t allowed but clearly covid is everywhere right now and realistically you won’t be adding to it.
I think it’s fine to ask other parents who may be passing to pick up. That was my plan when dh got covid if I got it (I didn’t).

Covidworries · 05/01/2022 22:18

Just because they can go in doesnt mean they should go in.
Positive people shouldnt leave home so really unless they can make their own way there not sure what else you can do. No way would i be transporting children from positive homes in my car but you may find someone willing

NoSquirrels · 05/01/2022 22:20

12 yr old goes to secondary on bus.

2x primary age children stay home & get remote work.

Chances are they’re all going to get it and at our primary school they’d prefer we keep home than send in.

I only had this problem for one day as kids then tested positive but I dropped to school and stayed in the car. Kids sat in the back with windows open and masks on.

Watapalava · 05/01/2022 22:20

Take them yourself - next week no one will even know who is positive

M1RR0R · 05/01/2022 22:20

The school provided homeschool, they tested positive a few days later anyway. It was for the best, I wouldn’t have sent them in.

Watapalava · 05/01/2022 22:21

With 1 in 15 people in England having covid most families will have someone in extended circle who is a contact

You can certainly ask, it’s not ideally having a child from positive household in the car but they mixing all day at school anyway. You can offer return favour in the future, most people would be grateful to be owed big ask like that with amount of cases around.

Mo1911 · 05/01/2022 22:27

They shouldn't be going in to school!

Meadowblossom · 05/01/2022 22:30

If it’s fine for the teachers to have them all day in their classroom, it’s fine for other parents to have them in their car for the school run.

AnEpisodeOfEastenders · 05/01/2022 22:35

Just take them to school. Covid is so 2021.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 05/01/2022 22:37

The DC don't have to stay at home but you should not leave the house to take them to school. Schools have a 'Covid related ' code so it won't be an unauthorised absence. Most schools will send work home but don't worry if you are too ill to support them.

Covidworries · 05/01/2022 22:39

@anepisodeofeastenders

Hmm

Do you know what else was 2021....
Confidence that the supermarket would have food.
Confidence that the firebirgage would come to your house on fire
Confidence that should you need it you would get medical treatment

The sooner people try to move on and get on with life without having a little test to tell you to the better. Thais has gone on far too long and I’m done with it. My next illness is a cold, not Covid.

GrandmasCat · 05/01/2022 22:43

They should stay at home. They are unvaccinated and with two people I’ll at home they will be able to pass it on no problem.

Just saying because if they pass it to the teacher you may have a childcare problem by the time you and/or your husband need to go back to work.

AnEpisodeOfEastenders · 05/01/2022 22:45

And the supermarket had food. The fire brigade did come. I did get medical treatment. Maybe stop reading the daily mail.

twinkletoesimnot · 05/01/2022 22:46

As will the rest of the class.

Never mind the fact that some might actually get ill.
And of course the massive disruption, stress and extra work this would cause the school.

But yeah - childcare is what's important 🙄
