How much protection would one dose of vaccine have against omicron for my twelve year old?

Does anyone know? I keep reading that one or two doses of vaccine means omicron will largely evade the immunity. And that you need booster. So I am wondering if I should get him the 1st dose, by the time he is eligible for 2nd dose this wave will have passed and perhaps we will have an omicron vaccine by then.

He had covid already (probably delta) when he was too young for vaccine. But I presume this doesn’t give much immunity either. Don’t really want to send him to school with no protection though and end up getting covid again

I'd love to know this too. Have posted about this before but no responses. Can't seem to find an answer anywhere. Hope someone knows!

Thanks for replying. The vaccine was made against very early stage variant. So I assume it would have little help against omicron. I am kind of thinking maybe just wait til they have a vaccine which will protect against newer variants. I think probably whatever I do he will get covid when he is back into secondary school which I am a bit 🙁 about as it’s not fun and more schooling lost

I assume they would never publish data to say it will give 5, 10, 15% protection etc as this would just discourage people from getting it

I'd love to know this too. As the current vaccines were developed to target the original covid variant they are no longer very effective against omicron. I'd love to see some actual evidence of the degree of vaccine evasion

I'd also love to know how much milder omicron is intrinsically?

Anecdote, but DD1 had Covid in June (presumably Delta), then had her 1st dose in November, now DD2 currently has Covid (presumably omicron), but 8 days into DD2’s isolation DD1 hasn’t caught it, despite zero distancing from DD2. So it’s either DD1’s past infection, or her 1st dose, or probably a combination of both, which I think must be protecting her.

The data on effectiveness against omicron is early, especially for the UK, which is understandable. However those studies are publicly available and have been heavily covered in mainstream media. The UKHSA surveillance reports and Variant of Concern reports are the best source. The most recent is from Friday.

The evidence is that omicron is good at evading antibodies from other strains as well as from vaccines. It is less good at evading Pfizer or Moderna than it is AZ, but two doses of any vaccine will not prevent the majority of infections. There is still strong protection against severe illness.

My DS (13) only had his first vaccine today. He couldn’t have it any earlier as he had treatment which suppressed his immune system. He did have covid in September, and was only mildly unwell, but is highly unlikely to have developed immunity form that.
I’m worried about him going to back to school, the concern is more about the disruption to his schooling and the impact on all the school of covid is raging through it as it did in September/October.

I’m hoping the vaccine he had today does offer some protection.

I'd like to know this too. Dd had covid in October, so is just eligible for the vaccine now. Does it offer any extra protection to her?

Yes,each dose will give some protection, it's just that it starts to wane after a while. Infection will give some protection, one vaccine some, 2 vaccines a bit more. Always worth having I would think, but you need to weigh up the risks & benefits.
