Trying to get DD on her school trip but so confusing!

DD has a school trip to France in June, part of the curriculum, we have paid for some of it already. Travel firm says they need two vaccinations. If someone can’t get fully vaccinated due to a gap after Covid, they can have a refund if the trip is before 31st May, otherwise they don’t consider this a viable reason.

Over Christmas, our youngest child had Covid, poorly for a week, positive LFT and PCR, still positive LFT on day 9.

During this time, DD had a positive LFT on her fourth day of a nasty cold, then negative days 6,7,8. Her PCR on day 6 came back unreadable so we got another yesterday, day 10, which is negative. I am in two minds as to whether she can have her second vaccine.

According to the rules she should wait 12 weeks if Covid is confirmed. I have read around this and asked a few people who know virology/medicine. The consensus seems to be she probably did have it.

If we wait 12 weeks and she gets Covid during that time (either again or for her first time), her clock would run out to get a second vaccine.

Any thoughts or facts from anyone who has some insight into this? I can see the 12 weeks is to do with myocarditis risk to teens and obviously that’s been balanced by the government. Thank you.

I meant to say, she is needing her second vaccination, due mid Jan.

Take her for second jab now. Ds had covid in Nov and GP drop in centres here are vaccinating kids post covid at 28 days but not all are. If kids are vulnerable/or live with vulnerable they can have vax after covid legitimately at 28 days

I've had both kids vax at 28 days post covid and both fine. That was the rule prior to Nov change anyway

Watapalava · 03/01/2022 16:39

to be clear mine are not vulnerable - more that centres - inc GP are vaccinating all kids 12-15 at 28 days post covid.

Watapalava · 03/01/2022 16:39

(I did this for similar reason - school trip at Easter)

Snoken · 03/01/2022 17:07

Yea, DS had it in October, got his shot end of November. They said as long as 28 days had passed it would be fine. 12 weeks sounds excessive.

CrocodilesCry · 03/01/2022 17:09

The 12 week gap is because they will have some immunity for that time - not because it would cause a problem to have a dose before then.
I'd definitely get her jabbed.

Sallydimebar · 03/01/2022 17:55

@CrocodilesCry don’t think that’s correct, I heard even thou myocarditis is low it lowers again waiting 12 weeks from infection .

FluffyCat17 · 03/01/2022 17:59

Yes what I have read says it’s to do with minimising the risk of myocarditis, which I know is tiny anyway.

I didn’t think it was possible to have it done before the 12 weeks, as it’s one of the questions asked either when booking or attending. Are people just lying?

If it was to do with immunity surely that would be the case also for over 18s which is 28 days after infection.

My centre won’t jab 12 year old until 12 weeks clear maybe it’s different for 2nd jab if they were ok after 1st , can’t keep up with all the changes!

It’s for my Ds and boys are said to be at more risk so rather not take the chance .

Watapalava · 03/01/2022 18:47

My kids were given 1st jab at 28 days post covid at a walk in site. All walk in sites near me are applying 28 day rule not 12 weeks. I expect online won't let you but walk ins will

FluffyCat17 · 03/01/2022 20:00

At the moment we are only being offered second vaccinations an hour away and I have no idea on their policy. DH thought it would happen through school but they’ve gone quiet on that.

fluffy are there no walk in places nearby? There are dozens near me?

Serenschintte · 03/01/2022 20:07

Yes they are lying or fudging it. My friend got her sons second vaccine and he had Covid two weeks before

School might know more in the coming week. Our local school vaccination team was enquiring with us about possible dates before we broke up, so I suspect our school would know more quite soon.
Watapalava · 03/01/2022 21:02

No one is lying

At every vax site they bring up child nhs records same as with adults

Each vax has to go against their medical records otherwise how does the app update

Most teens are getting it because walk in centres are allowing it.

My gp himself gave ds his vax

Either that or kids have had covid postive lft and just isolated without a pcr - I know a lot of people who are just isolating after lft and not going for pcr so that could be the reason

If no pcr, no covid on their history

FluffyCat17 · 04/01/2022 11:36

Thanks, we thought it was better to book to secure a date but I will look at walk-ins. Also wait a week to see what school comes up with.

We are currently thinking do it at eight weeks after her symptoms.
