Where is Boris going to get all these spare staff from to redeploy across the public sectors? What is going on across ALL sectors? Something has got to give.

Schools are apparently going to use support staff for Teaching roles so the schools stay open. He has now also declared that NHS staff will be redeployed to "fill the gaps". The problem is there are no staff to fill the existing roles!

Where are these staff going to be magically pulled from? How can he expect low paid teaching assistants to fill in for teachers?

A video was recently released by our Trust (on behalf of the entire county) begging relatives of patients to take their loved ones in so they can discharge them and free up beds because we are over capacity and have zero staff to actually man the wards as it is.

Honestly, the whole world of employment seems to have collapsed in on itself. Shops, pubs and restaurants are closing all over the show, offices can't function unless staff can WFH, and management can't hire people into ANY of these roles, regardless of sector, because they refuse to be flexible and/or pay people (especially Key Workers) more.

Something has got to give because this is totally and utterly unsustainable across the board.

It is a disgrace. I work in early years and a majority of our workforce is on sick leave.

Doesn’t help it is paid full whack so people are off constantly for every reason under the sun and continually off with Covid multiple times as it isn’t counted against absence and you get paid your full salary no matter how many times you ‘catch’ it

Another full lockdown needs to be declared ASAP, shutting the schools apart for essential key worker children

VaccineSticker · 03/01/2022 20:49

They say there’s no lockdown but wet are all about have lockdown by default in the next 4-6weeks causing lots of break.

Posted too soon. … causing breakdown of most services.

Boris needs to remove fines for not taking children to school. So those who can and want could take their children out from school. Without any other worries than teaching their own children.

They could temporarily change the law and allow the un vaccinated carers to work. To help care for bed blockers. I think un vaccinated carers are better than no carers.

No, we really do not need a full lockdown.
Porfre · 03/01/2022 20:58

@MrsHamlet
It helps because they will definitely get a PCR rather than trying to book online- where there might not be any tests or wait for a home PCR.

Also maybe they've got a faster turnaround for the tests done at the Hospital- who knows.

It is seriously worrying that the government have got no plan for this situation two years after this whole thing started.

Absolutely not. Children need to be in school. Have the previous lockdowns not taught us anything about how vulnerable children slip through the net when there is no expectation to attend school?. No more.

@RememberThePenguins

Local Authority employee here. We've been asked to either work additional hours or be redeployed entirely to local care homes. Anyone who agrees will be given a virtual training session before they start.

This request has gone to all employees, i.e., those with no experience in the care sector.

Can't see anything going wrong with that...

I know of four local authorities where this is happening.

Can't staff care homes so people are having to stay in the community at risk. Can't staff home care so people in the community are at risk. Can't get people out of hospital. Can't get people in to hospital.

Local authorities are asking any member of staff willing to do a few hours to volunteer to work in social care either in care homes or in people's own homes. Even if they have no experience of social care. One plea I saw didn't even seem to suggest a DBS was necessary.

Health and social care workers are 'exempt' from self isolation rules but the pot was already running on empty.

We are rapidly heading towards a social care apocalypse. Why is it not front page news? The old and the vulnerable are literally being abandoned by the government.

mrshoho · 03/01/2022 21:14

@StealthPolarBear

The teaching assistants can become shop staff to cover store shortages. The shop staff can become healthcare assistants to prop up the NHS. The healthcare assistants will be rapidly redeployed to the classrooms up and down the land to educate our children. What can possibly go wrong?
Pretty accurate description I would say. Robbing Peter to pay Paul across the public sector. As well as support staff teaching they will have double classes to manage. That's going to be just marvellous. Carehome residents being looked after by civil servants who have watched a video? If we were going to go through this over a short period it could possibly work but this could go on for months. We arectold now the booster wanes fast - 10 weeks? Those who had it in September/October are some of the most vulnerable as well as a large amount of health and social care workers. I'm sorry I'm not optimistic.

Fine ideas there totally agree

and I really hope we both work in one of the local authorities I know of because if we don't its even more widespread than I thought.

I won't be front page news until it crumples. Probably not even then, given the lack of accountability in politics at the moment.

This is a consequence of under investment, Brexit and Covid. I blame the Tories directly for 2/3.

MrsHamlet · 03/01/2022 21:23

My local authority is redeploying staff too.

Successive Governments have not bit the bullet and put resources in due to cost and associated tax hikes

This is just the chickens coming home to roost 😳

But Johnson has instructed ministers to come up with robust strategies. Hmm

That will be his responsibility discharged in his eyes, the lazy sod.

But they aren't coming home to roost. Boris Johnson isn't holding a press conference about the social care crisis and imploring Great Britain to roll up their sleeves and pitch in.

No one is offering golden handshakes for people to join the care industry. Or declaring a major incident.

Old and disabled people are actually being left in pain, with no one to take them to the toilet or feed them or keep them safe.

And the government response is ....

Likkleredridinghood · 03/01/2022 23:08

The last 4 governments have been coalition then conservative. Just hope the electorate will hold them to account at the next GE. But knowing the UK they will either have forgotten or vote for a UKIP mark 2 reboot Hmm

Motorina · 03/01/2022 23:22

@RememberThePenguins, @hatgirl - are they actually getting any volunteers?

(Mandatory redeployment to the care sector is the moment I walk. It requires a skill set and a character type that I don't have. Two years ago I would have hated it and done it anyway. Now? Bugger that. That good-will ship has sailed.)

It's been plain on several threads that many people value their right to live a normal life over the right of the vulnerable to live at all.

Two years on and I'm breathless at some of the comments I've read in the past week on various threads here-truly baffling that so many still fail to recognise the sheer hell so many continue tk face whilst others are falling over themselves to get to a pub. I'll never find logic in this it's so shocking to me.

It's hard to see Espresso. The message that my family don't matter has been heard loud and clear.

QueenofLouisiana · 04/01/2022 00:20

Apparently we are going to double up classes and get TAs to support for absent teachers. No idea where I’ll put an extra 30 kids or how I’d teach them without support as there are several with EHCPs who are legally entitled to significantly different teaching strategies or support ratios.

Still, the government keep saying that there isn’t a recruitment or retention issue, so let’s just draft in some of those spare teachers with our massive supply budgets.

Actually, a few days in a “well ventilated” classroom in January will have most supply staff walking out in disgust. I’m already dreading a return to teaching children who are cold and miserable in coats, hats and extra socks.

Yours and families like them do and should matter. The sad fact is that until placed themselves into such a position others are oblivious and inconsiderate. I do hope you're okay x
