Omicron and unvaccinated

A relative has tested positive. So far experiencing flu like symptoms. Unvaccinated age 54. Overweight (not obese) but no known underlining conditions. I don't know that it is definitely omicron but wondered if anyone has experience with the new variant. It appears milder so hoping he will be ok even if not vaccinated.

It’s impossible to know sadly. Most people don’t require hospital treatment - even with the initial variant - so try not to worry. An oximeter can help to make sure quick treatment if blood oxygen levels drop.

Only time will tell. It's thought that it's only milder because of high levels of vaccination & past infection in the population, so that obviously doesn't apply to your relative. Chances are your they will be fine, but maybe it will make them think about vaccination in the future?

My DH has this. A little younger and not overweight

I’m not trying to be glib but it really was a few days of feeling a little off. Aches. A headache for a day. Fine by day three

He has no underlying health issues though and I make sure his vitamin d level is fine.

I also have him a few basic supplements - extra zinc a few days.

I hope your relative is fine

My friends brother just tested positive as well. Unvaccinated and only symptoms are very mild so far. I would be very interested in a study to see how the unvaccinated fair with Omicron vs the vaccinated. And if it's really the booster jab that's been making everyone feel like they've got it mild because of it, or if it's really just mild. From what I read from scientists & doctors in SA most people experienced very mild symptoms due to a less vaccinated population and natural immunity built up from previous delta infections

It depends on his immune system and any underlying conditions he may have. My friend's family are all down with it at the moment. All unvaccinated except friend and her mum, all mild except for her brother who is sick as a dog and now revising his views on the mildness of the "cold" and the amazingness of his immune system. But even he doesnt need hospital.

Two unvaxxed here, 61yo with co-morbidities (hypertension & heart/blood issues) and 48yo.
Both fine although the younger partner is finding it harder to throw off the cough. Stress seems to have an impact.

It's strange how it affects everyone so differently. My boyfriend has been really quite poorly with it, his throat felt like it was swelling up last night and he couldn't even drink water, he was really quite scared. He's mid 40's and healthy.

My whole family have tested positive for covid this week. All very mild. Me and my husband are the only ones unvaxxed and we haven't caught it despite all being at the same events all week. Hoping if we catch it we also have a mild version of it.. But who knows.
