How to get child to school?

Hi all

Me, DH and one of our kids have covid. My eldest doesn't but she won't be able to go to school when they get back as I drive her there (too far to walk). She is too young to use public transport alone.

DH can't take her due to his job and I don't think it would be fair to ask a friend when most of our household have covid. I guess she just has to miss school for a few days?

Has anyone else been in this situation?

Many thanks

Hi @bingandflop

Sorry to hear that and hope you're not feeling too bad. Yes, we had the same issue a few weeks ago. Like you I felt it was too big an ask to ask if a friend could take my son to school so we kept him home too. Bit of a nuisance but school we're very understanding.

There have been lots of threads on this, try a search.

And check if your school even require those from positive households to come in - it differs from LA to LA or school to school.

Was in this situation 3 weeks ago, DH has to go out to work early every morning, my youngest had covid on the Monday and I could not physically get my eldest to school,
One of his friends mum said she would meet us at the gate if I drive (literally only a 1 minute walk but obviously my youngest had covid) but my eldest tested positive that Friday and had to then miss the last week of school.

Yes we were in this situation and 2 days later DS who had previously tested negative on PCR tested positive, so I’m glad that I called his school nurse and said that he had a headache and sore throat (he didn’t) as they told us to wait for another PCR, therefore buying us a couple of days absence.

I felt very uncomfortable sending him in either by taxi or public transport or asking someone to give him a lift to school and risking others despite it being “allowed “.
Such a dilemma I sympathise 😣

Thanks all, I think I will just keep her off. She may well have it by then anyway Sad

Can you not driver her there? You don't need to get out of the car?

bingandflop · 01/01/2022 19:16

Hiya @Blubells I am happy to do that but not sure I'm allowed as technically not allowed to leave the house?

I would just drive her yourself.

Mokoloko · 01/01/2022 19:38

If she is old enough to walk in from the gates by herself I would also do the same.
I couldn't do that because my eldest is only 7.

I'm not sure why you are saying it wouldn't be right for a friend to take her but it's ok for her to go to school and sit close to staff and other children.

I'd keep her at home.

Because current guidelines state that close contacts do not need to isolate Confused as long as they are vaccinated (if possible) and test daily, they can carry on as normal.

Whatever peoples opinions are, that is the guidance.

Silverswirl · 01/01/2022 19:58

If she is still negative by the time school starts you drive her.
People have asked T&T about this directly and they have said take them in the car and arrange a staff member to meet them if there is no other way.
Kids need to be in school full stop.

Sherrystrull · 01/01/2022 20:16

@riiichteeabiiscuit

I understand the guidance.

I'm just saying I was confused by the unwillingness to ask a friend to give her a lift due to the risk but was happy to send her on a bus or into class with other children and staff.

If the op is worrying about potentially spreading to a friend then maybe she needs to think about other people her daughter might come into contact with.

Tigersteakpie · 01/01/2022 20:32

I have walked classmates of my children to school when their parents have been positive. We aren't that close but they live down the road so I was the sensible option. We walk past their house on our way.

It's important for the kids to go to school whilst they can. They shouldn't miss out unless they are actually testing positive.

I just waited at the end of the drive for the kids. Didn't hold their hands as they didn't need it, but otherwise totally normal. Just stayed aware of my distance.

But if the kid has it, they are in the class with my kid anyway so you might be surprised to find your friends are happy to help.

I’ve been in this situation loads of times, school told me to keep them home (I don’t drive)
