Poorly breast fed baby - mum Covid positive

I’ve just had a positive LFT (had slight runny nose last week but no other symptoms) so haven’t checked. My parents who where staying with us over Christmas tested positive yesterday evening - also cold symptoms earlier in the week but otherwise fine.

My 5 week old isn’t doing so well though he has been snotty since 27th and started getting chest retractions yesterday - gp asked me to take him in and then sent us on to hospital yesterday for his obs to be checked. His O2 levels were perfect and they said it looked like bronchiolitis and to bring him back if it gets worse.

If I’m supposed to be isolating what happens if baby needs to go to hospital- being breastfed it would likely need to be me taking him in - has anyone been in this situation and knows what happens?

I also have a 3 year old who needs looking after - my dp would obviously do this but has booked his own PCR for this morning so might also be positive too.

Can you call the part of the hospital hat treated you, and discuss with them?

Seeking medical assistance is one of the reasons allowed for breaking isolation so I'm sure seeking it for such a young and breastfed infant would count! Obviously you'd have to inform the hospital though.

Hope he gets better quickly and you too.

Ahh what a tricky situation! We had had covid positive babies admitted and a covid pos parent could accompany them since the baby was going to an isolated area anyway. But given that your baby is assumed to not have covid, it is quite an unusual situation and I am not quite sure how it will work. I think just keep hoping and praying that baby doesn't need to go in.

You would go in with baby and isolate as a unit. Just make sure you take in everything you might need as your partner might not be able to visit or drop things off. Hope you and your little one get better soon.

Thanks for the info - we have a community nurse coming today to check on him- I’ve told her we have Covid in the house and they are still coming so that’s good news - I will ask what the deal would be if we have to go back into hospital when they get to us
