Omicron affecting DC worse than previous variants??

UndertheCedartree · 31/12/2021 14:41

Has anyone else found that Omicron seems to be hitting DC worse than previous types?

Yes there are worrying data on child hospitalisations from SA, Israel, New York already, and paediatric admissions here are going up.

Msloverlover · 31/12/2021 14:56

Nope. 3 year old had fever last time and completely asymptomatic this time.

JanglyBeads · 31/12/2021 14:58

OP, did you mean overall (my interpretation of your question) or in individuals (the other poster's interpretation)?

Am guessing the latter.

“ In fact, preliminary data suggests that compared with the Delta variant, Omicron appears to be causing milder illness in children, similar to early findings for adults.”

Msloverlover · 31/12/2021 15:02

But I would assume from the op wording (“DC”, “has anyone found”) that she is in fact asking for personal experiences.

Bizawit · 31/12/2021 15:02

Anecdotal of course, but sharing my experience in case it can provide some context. My infant is one of those London admissions stats. Whilst we were there I saw several other babies admitted for Covid. All were there very briefly and were essentially fine, just had the usual viral symptoms. For babies under 3 months, medics are super cautious- a temperature over 38 degrees will trigger full sepsis screen and treatment (hence admission) just as a precaution. Nurses and drs said they are seeing many more babies positive with Covid, but they are not getting sick. When my baby’s Covid swab came back positive , the paediatrician’s words were “that’s reassuring, it’s probably just Covid”. Baby was discharged after one night x

Scare mongering nonsense

Is that because Omicron is more severe though or because of the sheer number of people catching it? More people now have Covid than ever before, so unfortunately there might be more children admitted to hospital while they remain unvaccinated.
the80sweregreat · 31/12/2021 15:08

The naked scientist , Dr Chris Smith , on the news said that the virus would work its way through the population and start to affect teens and young children/ babies etc
This was ages ago , but it stuck with me and this seems to be the case now.
I'm sorry for anyone worried about their children and covid , it's a nasty virus and even worse if they can't tell you what is wrong too :(
Let's hope this is heralding the end of the pandemic next year.

I think a bit of both, really. Thank you for the info.

Yes anything that doesn't fit your agenda. Is scare mongering. Mongering for ffs! Parents deserve to be informed and we are entitled to discuss it. Grow up with your minimising.

Yes but just repeating headline statistics without any context can often be misleading and promote unnecessary and unhelpful fear.

Thank you, all. We are on our 2nd round of Covid. Last time DS just had loss of taste and smell (assumed he had Covid as no tests then out of hospital), DD had no symptoms so no idea if she actually had it if course. This time both have been very unwell as in not getting out of bed, sleep most of the day, feeling awful. Thankfully after 6 days (yesterday) they started feeling better but still both slept all afternoon. My friend's DD has been the same.

But this is not based on fact.
Footnote · 31/12/2021 15:40

The only interesting comparison would be young children with unvaccinated adults, not with vaccinated adults.

I hope they feel better soon. There seems to be a lot on here about people who catch Covid more than once with very different degrees of illness each time - it certainly has odd effects on the body.
TheVanguardSix · 31/12/2021 15:41

My kids never had covid that I know of until now. Last Christmas, their dad was hospitalised and ventilated. We didn't get covid (or at least, didn't test because the kids and I had no symptoms). Anyway, this Christmas, we've all had it, the kids and I (I am separated from my husband this year) and I have to say, I was surprised, considering all the 'it's mild' stories from fellow parents in December, by how walloped my kids were by it. For about two days/nights my 11 and 7 year old were seriously 'scary' ill. I was scared. They seemed to flow through it very quickly and bounce back fast enough thank heavens, while my 19 year old and I are still battle weary, 2 weeks on- though we weren't as ill as the younger ones. It's weird.

rainrainraincamedowndowndown · 31/12/2021 15:46

Isn't that purely because so many people/children are getting infected at the same time?

JanglyBeads · 31/12/2021 15:49

So here's some data for those who haven't yet seen it (because it is not being widely reported really)

• 92 0-5s were admitted to English hospitals with covid yesterday. It was 50 on Christmas Day. These are/were both new records. ( www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/number-babies-toddlers-hospital-covid-25821925 )

Paediatric admissions higher than at any other point in the pandemic - 0-5s and 6-17s (will post a link if the pic doesn't work:

JanglyBeads · 31/12/2021 15:51

Omicron affecting DC worse than previous variants??
MindTheChristmasGap · 31/12/2021 15:51

When did they have covid last time op?

Lucked · 31/12/2021 15:55

We need more data.

We don’t know how many of them are concurrent infections. DH is a paediatrician. There were no kids admitted for covid symptoms on his ward as of yesterday but they have kids admitted for other reasons who are testing positive because it is rife in the community.

MindTheChristmasGap · 31/12/2021 15:58

That report says a further study should have been available the week after. I've seen nothing since.🤷

MindTheChristmasGap · 31/12/2021 15:59

Within the report the person pointing out the admissions says it could be due to parents being precautionary after the publicity around the new variant.
