Those who refer to Covid as a 'cold' - have you actually had it?

This is genuinely not goady. I'm just trying to distract myself (spiking fever with Covid).

There have been a few people in real life who have referred to Covid like this. One was back in Summer 20 and when I told him I'd been hospitalised with I due to breathlessness he suggested I was just having a panic attack!! Everyone who has referred to it as a cold (to me irl) has not actually had it. It seems a lot on here too refering to it as a cold or 'mild' illness have not actually had it. Mild means you don't need to be hospitalised afaik - not actually mild like a cold. They often seem to believe they have had it with no symptoms (maybe that helps them not be anxious about catching it) - not that that stops you catching it again of course!

I have to say it can feel a very lonely place when you see your DC so unwell and you are feeling dreadful yourself and people (who appear to have no experience of actually having the disease) are going on about how mild it is and we put up with colds we should be able to put up with this!

However 'mild' someone might have this I would not wish it on anyone.

I haven't described it as a cold but.... agree with you that 'mild' illness can make you feel completely shit. I had 2 colds recently that were both absolutely horrible but both were significantly shorter than Covid. Classic Covid literally laid me out for 5 days, though I bounced back with no problem, and Delta I was out for 6 days and not right for about 14. Just waiting for omicron tbh.

Lessofallthisunpleasantness · 31/12/2021 00:18

Just had it so this new Omicron I guess. Felt ill for one day with a headache and upset tummy. Scratchy throat and cough at night for a couple of nights. Very mild. Not as bad as a bad cold. Could totally carry on as normal.

Covidclaire · 31/12/2021 00:21

I don’t refer to it as a cold in terms of what the virus is, but I would say that for me personally it was milder than any cold I’ve ever had. Same for my OH.

But that’s the problem isn’t it. What’s pretty much nothing for one person can make another very ill.

Glassisalwaysgreener · 31/12/2021 00:23

I have it at the moment and have had it before. Both times like a cold. I’ve had the flu before which was far worse.

UndertheCedartree · 31/12/2021 00:24

@PermanentTemporary - I hope you don't get it again!

I had it a few weeks ago. I’ve since had a really bad cold and honestly, the cold is worse for me. It’s dragged on longer, and made me feel more ill than I did with covid.

Coughee · 31/12/2021 00:25

I haven’t dismissed it as a just a cold but it was certainly mild for me (and the rest of my family) and I’ve had it twice. In fact I’ve been unwell with a really nasty non Covid cough the last couple of weeks which was far worse. My own experience won’t stop me from behaving responsibly though because I’m aware of the risks to others. I hope you feel better soon op

UndertheCedartree · 31/12/2021 00:25

Personally Omicron feels less in my lungs and a milder illness, although I am breathless but not burning lungs. It has been a worse illness for my DC.

I'm on my second go around with covid the first time was horrendous this time I've been vaccinated twice and boostered (although it was the day before I found out I had it so it won't count for much) and it is milder HOWEVER there is no way I could drive a car and on several days I couldn't walk far ive even forgotten basic things like my own date of birth days of the week etc I've been incredibly breathless lost all sense of taste and smell my eyes feel like I've rubbed them with chilli powder its bad

immersivereader · 31/12/2021 00:28

I've had it. It was like a very mild chest infection, few days of feeling off, slight temperature. Lost taste for a day. Didn't actually have a cold, per se.

DH was much worse, it turned into pneumonia.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 31/12/2021 00:29

It wasn’t mild for me. I couldn’t maintain my oxygen saturation above 90%, and ended up in hospital for a few days - luckily I just needed steroids and supplemental oxygen, but I have been left with long covid - if I walk down the hall to the loo and back, I am out of breath.

If I do anything, I end up exhausted. For example, I iced our Christmas cake - I’d covered it with marzipan earlier, but couldn’t do it all in one go, so went back to make the icing and ice it, once I’d had a rest. By the time I finished, I was shaking with fatigue.

No cold has ever left me feeling this ill for this long - I had covid in the spring this year!

Yes, upset tummy seems to happen with this one. My DD has had some awful stomach aches, vomiting and nausea. I've had a lot of stomache aches and nausea not been sick, though. Good to hear you could carry on as normal. Seems you avoided the fatigue - that seems the killer with this one. My DC are feeling much better but have still slept for most of the day today.

Two friends of mine had it last week and said they’d have gone into work feeling like that if it wasn’t Covid. They needed some Lemsip but were up and about. Double vaccinated but not yet boosted.

elizabethdraper · 31/12/2021 00:31

I have it right now. A bit of a blocked nose, and feeling lazy

Was much sicker in October when I strep throat

Yes, you're right. And there seems no way to know. I mean from people with no underlying conditions sounds like some do have a 'cold like' illness and others are hospitalised and Long Covid.

No medication or paracetamol needed

prettymum · 31/12/2021 00:34

I tested positive last week, first time and triple vaccinated... definitely mild cold like symptoms for me with sniffles, sneezing and slight cough for a few days and all better now.

Angrymum22 · 31/12/2021 00:34

Oddly when I had the alpha strain I didn’t feel I’ll but the cough was horrendous. When I had delta the temp spikes made me feel rough but because you are isolating you are forced to lounge around waiting for every symptom. I had the alpha before restrictions started so just carried on working ( it wasn’t supposed to be in the community at the point).
I think because of the whole fear/drama around at the beginning of the pandemic anyone diagnosed would be more susceptible to anxiety and possible panic which could account for breathlessness. We are much less anxious about catching it now.

HesterShaw1 · 31/12/2021 00:35

I had delta and felt a bit grotty. The people I know who've had Covid recently including I guess mainly Omicron now, have had three days of cold symptoms and then very quickly recovered.

Though I'm not doubting your experience. It's a weird virus.

Angrymum22 · 31/12/2021 00:35

Ill my phone insists on changing it to I’ll

Interesting. When did you have it first time? I had it April 20 and then have it now. I've had the flu once. What I have now is similar but longer lasting. What I had in April 20 just does not even compare to flu with how bad it is.

None of the you guys seem to be the 'only a cold' people, though even if it was very mild for you.

I'm not going to pretend that of course my experience has effected my view on Covid as a 'really nasty illness'. It's good to hear not everyone has suffered so much.

I'm sorry to hear that. Do you experience faintness with it? I have both times and it makes it hard to walk. I'm really worried I won't be well enough to walk my DD to school next week due to that and the horrendous fatigue. It is milder this time (for me, worse for DC) but I am breathless too and lost taste/smell but not sure if that is just congested nose.
