Negative day 6 and 7, positive day 9

Bahhhhh!

Aysmptomatic son tested +ve last week which meant we had to cancel Christmas plans. LFTs negative day 6 and 7 - hurrah we thought. Tested again today (day 9) in advance of going to my parents for New Years, and he’s positive again.

Same infection? New one? Husband has also tested +ve in the interim, so don’t know if DS could have caught a second case off of him. DH day 6 and 7 (today) both negative (although he’s never had a positive LFT, just PCR).

Anyone had similar??

I am not an expert but as I understand it even if you have a positive LFT on Day 10 if you don't have symptoms you can stop isolating?
If you weren't going to your parents he'd never have tested and would have gone out after the day 7 negative as normal?

Apologies if I have misunderstood!

Teddypoops · 30/12/2021 11:52

Yes, that’s right.
It’s fairly faint today (tho definitely positive) so hoping it’ll go negative again! We are all going crazy not being able to do much.

I don’t really understand how you can isolate for 10 days and even if the LFT is positive you can go back to normal.
But I suppose if you have no symptoms you aren’t spreading it about?
Confusing!

I guess you could call 119 but wonder if they would always be cautious?

I think it's something to do with the virus still being present in your body but it is inactive, no longer able to infect others.

That's why they say not to test for 90 days after a positive.

That makes sense thanks

greenweepingwillow · 30/12/2021 15:23

you see this is concenring me.
I have to have 2 negative lateral flow tests 2 consecutive days before I can go back to work , but potentially this could be longer than 10 days...... Day 6 here for me and still very much positive.....

Enough4me · 30/12/2021 15:40

My DS was +ve on LFT, then on PCR, I stayed in with him for 10 days. I was -ve all the way through LFTs. The PCR information said not to retest him after the 10 days unless he gained additional symptoms as he could still show +ve. I think it's your husband that needs to isolate for longer as he didn't initially have it (to isolate for 10 days).

A friend of mine, after testing positive with symptoms, had 2 negative LFTs on day 6 and 7. Three days later she has had another positive LFT and also feeling unwell again . She was advised by NHS (don't know if 119 or test&trace) to ignore the most recent positive test, but she is now worried she was still contagious when ending her isolation and may have infected someone .
