Tested positive, coughing green mucus and burning chest

Morning, I'm on day 3 since testing positive.
Early 30s, fit and healthy, 2 jabs.
I have a very runny nose and all other classic symptoms such as persistent cough, temp, loss of taste and smell, bad headache and body aches etc.
My cough has got worse over the last 24hrs and I now have a burning sensation in my chest. To be clear, I dont feel breathless at all.
This morning as I'm coughing I'm bringing up a lot of thick green mucus (weirdly it's making me feel better to get it out of my system).
Just checking that this sounds like a normal part of covid symptoms and to see if there's anything else I need to be doing?
The constant cough isn't helping with the headache!
Thanks 🙂

Green mucus is more commonly a sign of a bacterial infection. It could be a secondary infection. I'd suggest you call 111.

Stevenage689 · 30/12/2021 09:26

Or try to get a gp phone appt if they do them.

Blupblup · 30/12/2021 09:26

My fil had this when he had covid but as pp said it was a secondary bacterial infection which needed antibiotics so I'd contact your GP.

IggysPop · 30/12/2021 09:27

You might have a chest infection too if the mucus you’re coughing up is discolored: www.nhs.uk/conditions/chest-infection/

I had this with Covid and had a course of anti-biotics (am asthmatic though).

Kara198 · 30/12/2021 09:28

Okay great, thank you. Will give them a call. Would I expect to be given a prescription over the phone, I assume they wouldn't want me to go in!?

I had green mucous and it just went away by itself.

swallowedAfly · 30/12/2021 09:38

Don't jump to antibiotics if you don't need to - as you say you don't feel breathless or anything and it is coming up easily now.

I think I had a sinus infection for an age and recently have started bringing up green stuff and feel much better for doing so. It means, to me, that my body is finally clearing it out thankfully (I was so stuffy headed and part deaf for ages). Sinus's are notoriously difficult to treat with ABs anyway due to poor levels of blood circulation there and I have reason to try to avoid ABs as much of possible because of another condition they effect plus chances of a Drs appointment here have been slim to zero so I just waited it out.

If your body is clearing it ok and you don't feel it's stuck or that you're breathless I'd drink lots of fluids, keep getting it out of your system and wait and see how you go. ABs are not good for your bowel health which is a part of your natural immune system that you don't really want to be bashing if avoidable. Obviously if the situation changes that doesn't apply.

Kara198 · 30/12/2021 09:40

Okay, thanks. Will hold off doing anything for now and see how I get on.
This has only been happening since this morning so hopefully my body will naturally clear it
Thank you for the advice, much appreciated

I was getting this with covid in the mornings only, cleared during the day and back the next morning. Not sure if it's normal but I didn't do anything about it and it went away.

TheVolturi · 30/12/2021 12:56

I had this in September and rang the Dr's. They gave me antibiotics over the phone because he said in his words You can't mess about with covid. I didn't end up taking them though because it seemed to clear itself.

Metallicalover · 30/12/2021 13:29

If your coughing green mucous on a morning and you have a runny nose it's probably from your post nasal drip when lying down.
If your not breathless, no fever I would monitor.
Only you know how you feel x

QueenofLouisiana · 30/12/2021 13:35

DH had this, it continued for about 3 weeks. As he wasn’t breathless and his oxygen levels were ok, the GP didn’t give him anything. It eventually cleared up.

Fruitygal · 30/12/2021 15:31

@Kara198 ring the GP and let them decide whether you need Antibiotics ...secondary infections can cause major issues with covid and lead to complications and Antibiotics will only prescribed IF needed.

My DDs teacher who is very fit and 30s ended up in hospital for 7 days as only jabbed twice and back in summer and had only limited immunity to COVID.

Do you have a oximeter (thing that goes on the end of your finger) to measure oxygen saturations? It's impossible to tell from just feeling ok or breathless.

ChimChimeny · 30/12/2021 15:42

Get some chesty cough medicine if you can, the active ingredient thins the mucus so it is easier to cough up. It is gross but definitely better out than in!

Hope you feel better soon

Moonopoly · 30/12/2021 15:46

@swallowedAfly please don’t give medical advice based on anecdotal evidence

OP please call a trained medical professional so they can decide what the best treatment for you is.

Feel better soon

Wilkolampshade · 30/12/2021 16:47

Identical to my DH's covid progression OP.
He was prescribed antibiotics over the phone and I went to get them for him.
If that's not possible for you perhaps a neighbour or street WA group could pick up the prescription for you?

swallowedAfly · 30/12/2021 20:33

Why particularly me Moonopoly rather than all the other posters who've said similar?

Most ethical doctors will tell you not to take antibiotics if not needed and I just gave an opinion and said obviously it changes if you are feeling unwell or things get worse.

Odd that you felt the need to single me out.
