Refused a booster vaccne - anaphylatic shock

HELP! I have had 2 vaccines of astra zeneca. I was refused a booster (Pfizer) as I had a reaction to the contraceptive injection 20 years ago and it has the same ingrediant in pfizer PEG. They advised me to go to my GP and request a referral to the allergy clinic who will decide the risks of giving me phizer or a third dose - which will have to be in a clinical setting incase I have an anaphylactic shock.
The GP was useless and said it was nothing to do with them and to contact 119 - 119 referred me back to the GP. I could not get past the receptionist who advised to just go to a vaccination site and ask for astra zeneca - I reiterated that I can not do this as astra zeneca is not being used as a booster and it needs to be a medical professional to recommend this. In the end I got to speak tothe GP who told me he has never heard of anyone being referred to an allergy clinic and that the waiting list is over a year. He reluctantly wrote a brief letter stating I had a reaction to the contraceptive injection and there was no incidents with the astra zeneca. I have made a booking at a site but 119 were doubtful they will give me astra zeneca -My last vaccine was over 6 months ago so I have no protection at all.

@Nivealove

Honestly. I wouldn't risk it and get the booster. What happens if you get another shock? Whether you go to an allergy clinic, see a doctor to carry out some times, there would always be a probability of getting a shock or not.
@Nivealove Have you any idea what anaphylaxis is? Fatal in some cases and never to be taken lightly. From reading the Green book it is likely to be fine but it would be better to have AZ or be at a facility prepared for it.
Nivealove · 29/12/2021 16:30

Cookerhood I wasn't clear. I meant I wouldn't advise the OP to get the booster or the vaccine at all if there is a risk she will get a shock. She is the perfect candidate to receive a medical exception certificate.

MMAMPWGHAP · 29/12/2021 16:40

A quick google tells me that Novavax also does not contain PEG so if they approve it look out for that too. (I was on the Novavax trial).) Was approved in EU just before Xmas and UK has bought 60million doses if I remember correctly.

Ah, so you have made a careful assessment of the OP's medical risk factors, her type of previous reaction (was it a IgE- or mast cell-mediated do you think?), the prevalence of Covid in her area, and the advice of the DH and Green Book, have you?
Nivealove · 29/12/2021 17:20

@MissLucyEyelesbarrow

What is the issue? OP has every right to request for a medical exemption certificate if this is what she wishes. Personally, no vaccine would make me want to risk my life.

OP wants the vaccine though.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 29/12/2021 17:31

The issue is that you are giving the OP advice that could have very serious consequences, when you clearly lack the proper information to advise her appropriately. It’s bloody dangerous to start telling people not to get vaccinated. For all you know, the OP has major health issues.

And the DH guidance is not to issue exemption certificates unless someone is allergic to all the COVID vaccines.

Gladioli23 · 29/12/2021 18:25

So having a dig through of the Nottingham website they have a helpline number you can call:

nottsccg.nhs.uk/covid-19/covid-19-vaccinations/vaccination-faqs/

0300 500 80 80

To go to Nottinghamshire county council. It says in the FAQs that you should contact your doctor if you've had a serious reaction before so I would call it, be clear that you've already done that and that you're looking to escalate this to get a solution.

In my area they'd refer you to the hospital who would then either give you Pfizer under supervision for a significant period afterwards if they thought it was safe, or give you AZ - and they'd have an anaphylaxis specialist on hand.

If you continue to experience difficulty then go up to the CCG but there's no shortage of patients in a similar position to you so they should definitely have a procedure in place.

Motorina · 29/12/2021 18:55

The Nottinghamshire vaccine page gives a name and number for their vaccine lead. Under the vaccines for frontline health and social care section. There's also an email a few lines further down.

www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/care/coronavirus/covid-19-vaccinations

The Nottinghamshire CCG vaccines page has the same email and phone number nottsccg.nhs.uk/covid-19/covid-19-vaccinations/vaccination-faqs/

I'd give one or other a try as they'll know they local situation and what pathway you need to follow.

Motorina · 29/12/2021 18:55

@Gladioli23 you beat me to it! Grin

Gladioli23 · 29/12/2021 19:09

Motorina xD - great minds!

Bigfathairyones · 29/12/2021 19:12

I had this and I got the AZ for my booster - the vacc centre had a few doses as back up. The centre had to ring a few other knowledgeable people and I was asked to come back later, which I did and had the booster.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 29/12/2021 19:21

@bluebells34 if you can get to midland road Derby they give AZ on Wednesday and Saturday morning, I had my 3rd AZ there for similar reasons

That’s your choice though.
Some people would rather not risk covid to them and their families.
Op hasn’t asked about being exempt, she wants to be vaccinated.

Good luck op Flowers hope you get somewhere.

FelicityBeedle · 29/12/2021 19:33

Am I being very stupid, isn’t Moderna an option for you?

Cattitudes · 29/12/2021 19:51

No, it is very similar to Pfizer.

OP call your CGP and maybe those of neighbouring counties and they will have the details though for some areas it will only be on a certain day. A letter from the GP saying you need AZ should be enough. Takes a bit of time to sort out though. Good luck.

GP said the waiting list for the allergy clinic is over a year and said by which time covid will be a thing of the past- his attitude was beyond awful[/quote]
GP probably means normal allergy clinic. There were special vaccine allergy clinics set up for this reason, I've referred a few people this year. Your GP may not be aware of this, most of ours aren't very familiar with the vaccine information as they aren't involved in the vaccinations.

Someone in the Practice should know how to refer you though.

bluebells34 · 30/12/2021 08:23

Thank you all for your messages and time. My anxieties stem from a friend who was anti vaccination and her husband ended up in ICU and nearly died. I am terrified of that happening to me. Ironically I work for notts county council 0300 500 80 80 and soke to a colleafue and they advised it is the GP

I have e mailed CCG and going to a walk in site on Sunday at a local hospital - someone needs to take responsibility here as I feel am doing their job for them (GP's) - its just so time consuming and stressful

@bluebells34

I live in Nottinghamshire - so far spoken to two GP's at the practice and they are not aware of referring anyone to the allergy clinics in this scenario and said it was totally unnecessary I have booked an appointment at a large vaccination site on Monday and going to go to a walk in at a hospital on Sunday to see if they have any AZ stored
It was QMC where my friend had her second jab in a room with a crash cart.

My friend got AZ as a booster in Liverpool ( she had anaphylactic shock 5 years ago when having some cancer treatment)....it was no big drama....just ringing round a few vaccine centres to find which had AZ ....she had to wait around 4 weeks after she was due a booster for AZ to be offered...but all done and dusted now.....3 AZ in total
Cookerhood · 30/12/2021 09:18

@Siwa

Could you get a flu jab? It doesn't have the same battle plan the vaccines do (to target Covid specifically), but it boosts the immune system up a lot. When I was in SE Asia, I had a basic flu jab right before a bad SARS outbreak and didn't get it until 6 months later when the flu jab wore off (and I forgot to get a follow up). That SARS was deadlier but not as contagious.

Someone in my household had Covid right before Christmas and I didn't get sick.

Rubbish. The flu jab will not boost your immune system against Covid.
PheasantsNest · 30/12/2021 09:27

I had 3 AstraZeneca no issues.

bluebells34 · 04/01/2022 08:37

Just a quick update - I went to a vaccination site yesterday and was assessed by a gp on site and given the moderna vaccine. There was a crash cart on site should I have had a reaction which thankfully I didn't.
Thank you all for your comments and help with this
