Virtue signalling?

I was having a discussion on social media recently with a friend regarding getting boosted. One of her friends (presuming antivaxxer) popped up in the comments accusing me of virtue signalling because I've had my jabs.

It's not the first time I've seen it either, I've noted a few posters on here using the term to describe others who've been triple jabbed. Why?

My understanding of the term is that it means wanting or seeking recognition for being a morally superior person. How the fuck does this apply to getting your jabs which is a personal choice to protect your own health?! Anti vaxxers obviously think they are making the right choice by not having theirs yet they never seem to get called this.

Does anyone else understand this?

If you're talking about jabs (and disease control is a pretty frequent topic for conversation ) then saying what jabs you've had if fine.

Randomly dropping it in to unrelated conversation would be a bit weird.

But I don't see it as 'vepirtue signalling' because it's the ordinary responsible thing to do (protecting both the individual and giving the best chance that all of us escape restrictions)

custardbear45 · 29/12/2021 07:56

The nature of the conversation was that a friend posted asking for advice on having her booster - basically asking if people had been ill after having it. I replied saying my experience was that I had no bad after effects. Then her pal jumped on the comments and started with a load of antivax stuff plus calling me a virtue signaller.

She sounds like an arse. Ignore and move on!

rainrainraincamedowndowndown · 29/12/2021 07:58

Meh, do you think anything they say makes sense? If not, just ignore.

heldinadream · 29/12/2021 08:00

If they're an anti-vaxxer I would take no notice of anything they said. Their whole raison d'etre is to undermine vaccinations.

custardbear45 · 29/12/2021 08:01

I couldn't give a shit what they say really but I've heard the term mentioned here before in relation to being vaccinated. It just seems like a wordy bandwagon to jump on but it makes no sense!

It sounds like it's the co-ordinated antivaxxers latest phrase (have you noticed how they tend to sweep round in waves)

Just let it wash over you. What you said was entirely appropriate

rrhuth · 29/12/2021 08:08

Only twats use the term 'virtue signalling' so just ignore.

You're in good company, someone said it to the Archbishop of Canterbury GrinGrinGrin

Honestly, it's from the idiot's phrasebook.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 29/12/2021 08:09

I've seen virtue signalling slung at people for the most seemingly normal observations and comments. Don't worry about it.

Lesserspottedmama · 29/12/2021 08:14

I think virtue signalling is a thing. People being ostentatious about wearing a mask when it wasn’t mandatory or loudly proclaiming they’ve done an LFT before leaving their house. Over the top stuff where they clearly get some self esteem from being even more cautious than the rest of us are being. Sad for them.

Doesntfeellikexmas · 29/12/2021 08:16

She is a twat. And she doesn't even know what that phrase means, obviously.

Keeping2ChevronsApart · 29/12/2021 08:28

Does changing your profile photo to 'I've had my booster' fall under that? That really annoys me, I want to comment 'so what!'😂

IMO it says more about the person who interprets this as being about 'virtue' than it does about the person saying/doing x/y/z.

Those who see everything as 'virtue signalling' seem to be very chippy about things.

MarshmallowFondant · 29/12/2021 08:34

I don't see it as virtue signalling to have your jabs.

I do think though it's very odd to post "Just got boosted" or similar on social media, or put a frame around your picture or something. Unnecessary, isn't it?

custardbear45 · 29/12/2021 08:38

@MarshmallowFondant probably, but it's topical isn't it. You can get frames for FB profile pictures that say things like 'be kind' or 'support the NHS' so it's not unusual.

I wouldn't do it personally but I think even that's a stretch to label it as virtue signalling.

It was a common phrase on here, but seems to have died away a bit in recent times.
