Children and covid fever

damnthisvirusandmarriage · 28/12/2021 19:55

My children ages 5&7 have had fever for 4 days now.

Between 38 and over 40. Calpol doesn’t do much but perk them up.

When should I call 111 for advice?

Ibuprofen is better than Calpol for bringing temp down. I think medical professionals tend to say if they're ok in themselves, then keep an eye on them but don't worry too much.

40 would worry me a bit. I think I’d ring x

Bobholll · 28/12/2021 20:28

I agree, 38 wouldn’t really concern me. 40 would absolutely concern me.

I’d def get a medical opinion. And as PP, are you alternating with nurofen? It def helps. My youngest DD gets tonsillitis really frequently & commonly spikes fevers to 39. We do calpol & brofen every two/three hours. So calpol at 7am. Brofen at 9am, calpol at 11.30/12ish etc .. just be wary it’s only 3 doses of ibuprofen in 24 hours compared to 4 doses of calpol!

It’s gone up to 41.9 after calpol tol. I’m on hold to 111

Poor children. High temp makes you feel dreadful.

My daughter recently had a virus (not covid) and had a worrying temperature for 4 days - we did contact the GP before negative PCR as it was 39.8 - for reassurance that I was doing all the right things. They advised to continue what I was doing calpol/ibuprofen as others had said.
No harm in checking in with medical professionals - they ask the question checking for any other symptoms which may be of concern.
I feel for you my daughter is a live wire usually! Seeing her so quiet was unusual for 5 days!!

Incognito22333 · 28/12/2021 20:42

One of my children used to get very high temperatures - had to strip all clothes off, cold compresses on ankles and legs, ibuprofen and calpol alternated, just thing sheet and sometimes opened window for fresh air. Try everything to cool them down naturally too

damnthisvirusandmarriage · 28/12/2021 20:43

She’s saying she’s cold though. Won’t tolerate being stripped off/cold things 😭

Same thing with my 5 year old. 111 said take him to urgent care in hospital. Hospital said he needs a covid test, so we are now awaiting the results. His temperature, headache and tummy ache comes and goes but he has stopped vomiting and is running about like a lunatic (his normal self).

BrotherHelp · 28/12/2021 20:51

A lot of children are presenting with covid and the symptoms being a really high fever and vomiting or abdominal pain.

wendz86 · 28/12/2021 21:08

My 6 year old went up to 40 with covid but did come down with calpol . I rang 111 as was worried but they said as long as she was responsive etc and was coming down with calpol was ok. Definitely worth calling especially if calpol not bringing it down .
