6 negative lft’s over 4 days!

Kaylasmum49 · 28/12/2021 15:23

My 18 year old dd started on Christmas Eve with a slight sore throat and blocked nose, she has also developed a cough since then. She is isolating in her room. She has had 6 negative lft’s over the last 4 days and I am trying to book a pcr for her. What is the likelihood of all these tests being false negative’s? Also my 14 year old ds has a slight sore throat today, he is unvaccinated and I am terrified that if it’s covid that he will become very ill. I have severe health anxiety and I am catastrophising. Any reassuring replies would be gratefully received.

Your 14yo is eligible for a vaccine.

Iggly · 28/12/2021 15:24

It’s that time of year when plenty of bugs are going around. So most likely one of those.

However if it’s covid and she started Xmas Eve and hasn’t got much worse then she’s fine I would have thought.

howley1 · 28/12/2021 15:27

we've all got the other bug going round at the moment which is the sore throat, sneezing etc but not covid. we've had all negative ltf and pcrs so it's definitely not covid.

If she's now day 5 of symptoms and not going downhill, she should start to feel better from about now onwards.

if you are concerned, Can you get your 14 yo vaccinated soon whilst you have a chance, before he is in contact with covid at some point?

bonnieliesovertheocean · 28/12/2021 15:29

Dh has had an awful cold since before Christmas. Streaming eyes, sore throat, headache, cough, temp, the usual. All lfts negative and finally got negative pcr result also. As pp mentioned above, covid doesn't stop the usual run of seasonal bugs.

steppemum · 28/12/2021 15:30

if he has 6 negative tests over the lats 4 days then she probably has a cold .

We had 2 neices and my son who all felt grotty in the week before Christmas, but tested negative on LFTs, and we all met over Christmas.

There are a LOT of normal coughs and colds going round.

Your 14 year old is extremely unlikely to get very sick due to his age, and he is eligible for a vaccine, so get him done.

LIZS · 28/12/2021 15:31

Have you tested the 14 yo? Order pcrs for both and lft yourself,

whataballbag · 28/12/2021 15:32

Quite likely

A lot of patients coming through to us have never had a positive lateral flow.

Groovee · 28/12/2021 15:34

My Dh had a sniffle on the 22nd. LFT's negative. 24th dd had a PCR at work, it returned positive. Booked PCR's for the rest of us and Dh and ds were positive. Ds only had one positive LFT the rest are negative. Dh is still negative on the LFT.

Keep trying for a PCR is my advice. We're lucky we've got one e wry time we have tried.

Kaylasmum49 · 28/12/2021 15:37

Thanks for the replies. My ds hasn’t had the vaccine yet as I have been really concerned about the risks of myocarditis, I know that there is a risk of that with covid but I have been terrified of both. Now it will be my fault if he gets very unwell with covid. How much protection does one dose of the vaccine give?

OP posts:
SadSplinter · 28/12/2021 15:41

Have you booked PCRs for the both?

Kaylasmum49 · 28/12/2021 15:43

I am trying to book pcr’s but not having much luck

OP posts:
steppemum · 28/12/2021 15:45

it is really, really unlikely that he will get ill will covid.
dd, ds and many of their friends have had it, none of them were veyr ill.

It is also very, very unlikely that he would get myocarditis, whereas one dose of covid vaccine would be pretty good at reducing the effect of covid.

I am curious as to why you are so worried about the potential effects on your ds who is not sick, but don't seem very worried about dd who is sick?
(not that I think you should be worried about dd, but it seems unbalanced)

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 28/12/2021 15:48

This may sound harsher than I intend and for that I apologise.

But honestly what can anyone here say to reassure you? If you are so anxious about covid, and even more anxious to vaccinate against covid, then you're in a very difficult place and I'm bit sure you will be reassured by anything anyone has to say.

I write this with kindness, I have anxiety (not health) and it's a complex situation that people can't reassure you out of.

Good luck.

Againstmachine · 28/12/2021 16:04

Stop wasting lfts they do cost money you know.

Get a PCR which I see you are doing.

Kaylasmum49 · 28/12/2021 16:11

I am not too worried about my dd as she is absolutely fine and double vaccinated. I’m more worried about my ds as he is unvaccinated.

Children and teens are incredibly unlikely to become very ill with Covid. My (obviously) unvaccinated 8 year old had Covid and you wouldn't even have known he had it apart from a slightly raised temperature for 2 days. I caught Covid after only 1 vaccination and it was like having a cold.

StampOnIt · 28/12/2021 16:18

Two close family members have had repeated negative lateral flows this week, they were testing daily as were close contacts to someone with covid and it was taking ages to get their pcr results back.

Their pcr tests came back positive yesterday (took 5 days to get result!)

StampOnIt · 28/12/2021 16:21

I will add neither have any symptoms! Hope your Ds is fine, my Dcs have all had it, too young to be vaccinated at the time (they are vaccinated now), neither were particularly ill, just like a bad cold.

10storeylovesong · 28/12/2021 16:31

I've been taking lfts every day for past week, sometimes 2 a day. All negative. Started with symptoms Xmas day, still negative on lft. A friend text to say she was positive on lft and I went for a pcr on boxing Day. Came back next day positive. I'm still negative on lft. My friend is asymptomatic but is strongly positive on lft.

Kaylasmum49 · 28/12/2021 17:45

I can only get an appointment for a walk through test centre and my ds is autistic with social communication difficulties and severe anxiety and won’t go to the walk through one, I don’t know what to do

OP posts:
Bobholll · 28/12/2021 20:21

Get your DD tested. You don’t need to test DS right now really. DD sounds like she has a cold but seeing as your anxiety is forcing her to isolate when you’ve no clue if she even has it.. get her bloody PCR tested! Drive as far as it takes! Order a postal test. Just find out if she does! Cos otherwise you’ve forced your DD to isolate in a room for 10 days for no actual reason! Confused also, she’s 18. An young adult. Surely she could have booked her own test?!

You should get your son vaccinated. Your health anxiety is having a huge impact on your kids in this scenario. That’s not fair. What does he want? What does his Dad think? You’ve let DD have it and she surely had just as much risk of the heart issue?

Autumnalblooms · 28/12/2021 23:02

@Bobholll woah hang on with the judgey unhelpful post .And also you don't have any right to tell any parent to get their child vaccinated that is their's and their child's decision .Op my teen Dc just slightly younger has current covid and apart from a day of a very high temp they are now snotty and back to their normal selves and they chose not to have the jab .I have my Ds the choice their body their right to choose .So please don't worry Flowers

Lindy2 · 28/12/2021 23:12

It sounds like a cold - particularly with the negative lateral flow tests. Obviously PCR tests are sensible to be sure.

With regard to vaccination the 12 - 15 clinics seem to be smaller and quieter. Obviously I don't know how it is everywhere but the booked appointment my DD went to was in a very small clinic and it was just the 12 - 15 age group there at that time. It was all very friendly and relaxed. My ADHD, ASD and a bit health phobic child did really well and had it done without any problems. Why don't you book your 14 year old an appointment and take it from there. The vaccination staff are going to be very experienced.

OvaHere · 28/12/2021 23:22

@Bobholll is right I'm afraid. Your health anxiety is impacting all of you and preventing you making clear decisions.

I posted along with others to your similar thread from the beginning of December when your DS told you he wanted a vaccination and you were going to chase up with the GP.

I'll repeat what I said there which is all my 3 sons have had vaccines and been absolutely fine. Including my own DS with autism who has similar difficulties to yours.

If you haven't done so yet please get in touch with your GP about both your anxiety and a vaccine for your DS (if you really feel he can't go to a walk in clinic).

Some concern is understandable but this level of anxiety seems to be making your lives harder than it should be. Flowers
