Third primary dose v booster

Abraxan · 27/12/2021 11:37

I had my booster mid November.

Primary 1 and 2 diesel were Pfizer.
My booster has Modena, which I believe is a half dose.

However, I've now received a hospital letter telling me I should be having three primary doses and then a booster, due to medication and health condition.

So, have I been given the wrong dose for my third jab?

And do I need to do anything about it?

I do have a GP appointment due first week of January and can ask there but just wondered if anyone had had similar and knew the answer?

Is the booster just half a dose? I thought it was a standard dose, just like the first two?

RachC2021 · 27/12/2021 11:39

If you should have ahead a third primary dose then you got the wrong jab. I haven’t seen anywhere how they resolve it though. Logically it might be you get another half Moderna and then a booster after that. Or maybe they give you a full Moderna to make it right. Think it’ll be a good question for the next press conference.

SpiderFluff · 27/12/2021 11:42

Moderna booster is half the dose.

Good question OP sorry I don't know the answer. Hopefully someone will make it clear.

Cookerhood · 27/12/2021 11:53

Yes you should have had the full dose. I imagine they will just give you a full dose "booster" of Moderna or Pfizer (which is the same dose anyway). I don't imagine your GP will have much of an answer, tbh . I would ask the consultant at the hospital what they recommend. It's a bit blooming late to be sending you this letter.

Booster is half a dose for Moderna, and a full dose for Pfizer.

Moderna is apparently a half dose for the booster.

Thanks.

I didn't get the letter until after my booster.
Tbh the hospital and gp information has been very hit and miss throughout, changing between cv and CEV, etc. And always delayed. They were both not overly great pre covid m, especially the gp surgery, but now even worse. Contacting the hospital department is a challenge in itself!

I'm not due to see the consultant for a while but in the new year will try calling and clarifying. I will mention to GP too just in the off chance.

I have tried Googling but not got any answers.

Wish our boosters had been Pfizer. Apparently that's a full dose for booster so wouldn't have had the issue.

Seems to be par for the course tbh.
I'm not really surprised it's taken them so long.

Moderna gives better and longer lasting protection. On top of Pfizer it's performing really well.

You've had a really good selection. If you get Moderna for your next jab you'll be very well covered if you've made antibodies. If I could have chosen my jabs from my research I'd choose Pfizer, Pfizer, Moderna, Moderna.

Having said that I had AZ and was happy to read it gives excellent deep immunity with Pfizer picking up the lack of neutralising antibodies with the booster.

Abraxan · 27/12/2021 17:11

Thanks

I'm not concerned about which ones I had tbh as think they're supposed to be good re effectiveness. On top of those I also did have covid as well, though a year ago now. Just curious as to what I should have been having and when.

For a third primary, it should have been a full (primary) dose of Moderna.

I'm not sure who is best to talk to to get this sorted out. The charity which represents the condition that put you in the 500,000 most critically vulnerable might be able to tell you what is best to do next.

The roll-out was such a shambles that you are unfortunately far from alone in receiving only half the dose you should have done

LittleG69 · 27/12/2021 17:56

I had Pfizer for my third primary after 2 x AZ. Is this incorrect? I got a third primary due to a chronic health condition

nether · 27/12/2021 18:03

Pfizer after AZ is fine.

It's the same dose whether primary or booster for Pfizer. It's only Moderna where the dose is different between third primary (full dose like other primaries) and booster (half dose like other boosters)

I had the "third dose" the way it's recorded is important as it determines if you get the lost dose the fourth and this is the booster for those CEV
Cookerhood · 27/12/2021 19:35

For most people it will be recorded as a booster on their records unfortunately as there was no way of recording a 3rd primary on the system (this may have changed as there is now a question about whether the patient is immunosuppressed.). This is going to cause problems when those who have had a 3rd primary come along for their booster

I think that’s why they’re saying that in order for someone to get a booster after a third primary you have to take your letter saying that you’re eligible for the third primary (assuming you kept it), or take a more recent letter saying that you’re eligible for a booster after your third primary.
FawnFrenchieMum · 27/12/2021 20:12

I think I’ve done the same. I’ve had a ‘booster’ but then received a letter about needing a third vaccine rather than a booster.
I had 2 x AZ then Pfizer for booster.
I’m not sure if I’m supposed to contact someone now or just leave it.

This is where I am stuck. I am due my booster in Jan. I had a 3rd primary mid October so over a month after it started to be rolled out. I can't book a booster though. So frustrating. GP can't help, 119 can't help, hospital gave me letter but the computer says NO
RachC2021 · 27/12/2021 20:29

@Garysmum take your letter to a walk-in centre when you get to 91 days or more. You can’t book ahead. (Unless they’ve fixed the database beforehand.)

RachC2021 · 27/12/2021 20:31

@FawnFrenchieMum when you get to 91+ days from your “booster” take that letter about third primary dose to a walk-in centre and you’ll get the fourth jab you’re due (your real booster). Because you had Pfizer there won’t be any issues.

That's a good idea. Hospital spelt it out in a letter for me. I just assumed I could book ahead like anyone else for a booster.

Abraxan · 27/12/2021 21:01

Yes I've been told I must take the letter with me. And to go via the GP or a walk in. It's not due til February.

Yeah. It's like YOU MUST BRING THIS LETTER. I mean who is going to be trying to wrangle an extra shot if they don't need it?!
