Interested to see how long people think wfh recommendation will last? I know no one has a crystal ball but I am thinking until March - anyone else?

95% of the roles at my work (around 5000 employees globally) will officially move to a permanent hybrid role as of Jan 1.

We were to go hybrid (3d wfh, 2d office) in December but the new variant put a stop to that. My company has now said the office is open if we need it but no date for returning to hybrid working. DH's company said next June 2022 to save keep changing their mind. Its graduates and new juniors I feel sorry for - its harder for them to make a good start.

@wallypopz

Closing railway lines and ending bus routes would reduce the amount of leisure travel which would drastically reduce tourism and further damage many local economies. It would also make it very difficult for people who do not drive to travel.

I think it's inevitable though, TFL are looking at closing a tube line apparently.

Indeed. TfL are looking at making massive cuts.

Northern Rail from the 4th are drastically reducing their service including completely abandoning some lines. Such as to Gainsborough, Doncaster to Scunthorpe, Huddersfield to Castleford as well as massively cutting other lines.

All other train operators have been asked to make similar levels of cuts in the coming weeks.

As for travel to leisure. Most of these leisure attractions aren’t really going to survive in their current form so that’s not really an issue.

The irony is that my DS doesn't realise what is missing from his working life as he's never worked in the office. He has a very well paid job and thinks it's great that his commute from bed to computer is 5 minutes.
He doesn't notice the lack of mentoring and personal development.
He does however notice that he misses out on the social life that comes with a bunch of young people starting their careers together and he can spend entire weeks not speaking to a real person outside work.

A friend recruits for a large tech company. She says many of their grad scheme recruits are really struggling.

I think work from home / a hybrid model is here to stay. It offers much more flexibility.

Whammyyammy · 27/12/2021 16:42

Forevermore hopefully. I have saved a fortune on commuting, coffees at work etc.

Get more done too, as mot spending hours in traffic jams, better for the environment too

If omicron drops off fast, which I suspect it will then I’d say end of Jan latest

Tryagainplease · 27/12/2021 17:10

It’s all well and good citing companies who are going to be doing this permanently.
I would like to know when the actual government guidance will change. Personally, I don’t think it will be for that much longer!

I agree, it will be until they see Cases start to decline again, which is likely To be latest end of Jan, but likely sooner.
BillGigolo · 27/12/2021 19:16

We’ve been told until mid-January and I hope that’s the case. Hybrid for the foreseeable though. I don’t hate wfh, but when I went back to a couple of days in the office I realised I had missed it a lot.

Starlightstarbright1 · 27/12/2021 19:20

I have a job can't wfh..

The last wfh directive.. i have not seen any reduction in traffic so not sure it makes much difference.
