Awaiting PCR results wwyd?

We are supposed to travel to my mum's this afternoon until boxing day, she's having 12 for Christmas day.

DC2 who is nearly 3 was sent home late Tuesday from nursery with a fever - they currently have several covid positive staff and kids. We got her a PCR test yesterday morning (1st available) but haven't had results yet. Latest we can make the call not to go is tomorrow morning due to having to drop the turkey and trimmings at mums (we've bought almost all the good) then also go to the shop for some food for us.

WWYD? There's about 16 hours before we need to leave, we've always had results in less than 24 before.

Options are:

  1. Just wait, don't plan or think about it until the morning.
  2. Make the call now as DC2 is ill anyway.
  3. Ask everyone attending if they're ok with us going without a result.

If we stay here, we've no tree and no oven, so it'll be spag bol or something for Christmas dinner! We also have DC1 who is 5 to consider.

LFTs are negative for all of us.

Make the call now as DC2 is poorly, it is the only fair thing to do and is also the right thing to do.

friendlycat · 23/12/2021 14:28

It would be option 2 for me.

PinkFizz1 · 23/12/2021 14:31

Option 2, but you’ll probably get your results before the morning anyway. Do NOT do option 3.

If it wasn't for covid I wouldn't think twice about taking her as she is, it's only because of COVID that I'm concerned. It wouldn't be a significant enough illness to consider the whole family missing Christmas if it were a normal year.

Also, call the test number - we were told of no results in 36 hours to call and I have had to do that twice where my contact details hadn't connected with the barcode on the test so they had the results but didn't know my info!

INeedNewShoes · 23/12/2021 14:32

You can't do option 3 with a clear conscience I'd have thought.

I'd go for option 2 if your DC is unwell anyway.

countbackfromten · 23/12/2021 14:33

@Thepineapplemystery I know it is difficult and Christmas and COVID makes it more so. I spent Christmas alone last year isolating so I know how tough it is. I hope they are better soon.

CrapDrawer · 23/12/2021 14:33

Can you drop the food off today. Get just-in-case food in and then make the call later on than you would have to if you left it all? As there are many covid cases at the nursery and your child has symptoms it would be safest for all involved to wait for the result.

Thepineapplemystery · 23/12/2021 14:36

I just feel so sad for DC1! No tree or decorations, no Christmas dinner, not seeing his extended family. I wish we'd planned to stay home all along like last year!

No, it's too far to travel after DH finishes work to also drive back as well. And we can't get the just incase food until Christmas food is gone as we don't have the fridge or freezer space!

We sometimes celebrate at home, sometimes with my parents. But we’ve always had a tree so I think it’s really strange it’s a thing for you now but hasn’t been for the whole of December.

I personally would wait for the pcr results then decide from there

xyzandabc · 23/12/2021 14:38

DD2 had PCR yesterday at 2pm, results back positive at 6.30 this morning. So I'd be hopeful you have results by tomorrow morning.

We had a 500 mile drive today but made the call yesterday, even if it came back negative to scrap going. We didn't want to risk one of us testing positive while so far from home and while visiting older relatives. We had no food or decoration/tree up either as we were expecting to be away. Shop done last night and tree currently going up now. My poor mum already had half the food to host us for a week though. So 2 of them will be eating Christmas food until about March!

Do not do 3. If it won't hurt anyone's logistics foodwise etc then maybe 1, otherwise 2.

superstar84 · 23/12/2021 14:40

Try and re register the test online, it's usually within 24 hours

We rang up a few weeks ago and they re registered it and it came through straight away. Adviced us if it ever happens again to re register it online and it almost always come straight through

Idontevenknow · 23/12/2021 14:42

I'd go for option 1. Hopefully results will be back by then and you can assess how your child is feeling

We're in the middle of a house renovation, hence the no oven. We don't have a living room, or a kitchen so nowhere to put a tree. We're cooking on a 2 ring gas camping stove and the microwave in the corner of our (thankfully large) bedroom!

As Dc2 is unwell and probably not wanting to be away from home and your family not wanting to catch whatever she has if it’s not covid, I’d cancel. I’d also give your mum as much notice as possible especially as she’s trying to organise a big meal.

How far away does your mum live? Would it be possible for someone to drop off made up plates if you do have to isolate?

With DC1, could you make some decorations or get some out of the attic to make home feel more Christmas like?

She's really not that ill. She's currently jumping in puddles on the drive whilst I shiver on the doorstep! She's had a nap today which is unlike her and has a snotty nose and temperature, which is how I know she is ill.

And to answer your other questions - mum is 2ish hours away in good traffic so definitely not dropping plates off! All decorations are somewhere in storage so it'll be homemade ones!

I was about to ask this!

I'd certainly go if it comes back negative. It's more likely to be negative the longer you have to wait afaik, as they tend to prioritise breaking the news to positives.

superstar84 · 23/12/2021 15:49

www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/testing/register-a-test-kit/

There's the link

If it says it's already registered then it's worked when you did it at the test centre

On one of ours it hadn't registered when they scanned it at the test centre, so the result was ready but they didn't know who the test belonged to which was why we didn't get the result
