Anyone got an absolute ton of food because of Covid?

We were meant to be hosting 10 people for Christmas, dh has tested positive this morning so now we have a mahoosive turkey, all the sides, puddings, party food. Fridge is absolutely stuffed and it's just the 2 of us Grin 🤦‍♀️. I might have to go through it and freeze some stuff as there's no way we can get through it all. I'd donate to a food bank but I'm feeling dodgy too, no lfts left and pcr booked for me. Would they even take food from a Covid house 🤦‍♀️

Could you give some away locally via Facebook?

I would try to contact a local church. I am sure they will know of needy families. They will most likely collect it.

Ooh thanks for the ideas!!

Cook the turkey and then carve it up into what you’ll eat hot or cold over the next four or five days, and what can be frozen for stews and curries at a later date etc. Once the meat is off the carcass it won’t seem such a massive amount.

Use by dates on fresh side dishes are often fairly long - if you meal planned then could you use them up between you over the next fortnight?

Food banks usually won’t take food that needs refrigerating from individuals because they’ve no guarantee that you’ve stored it correctly and they don’t want to run the risk of handing out spoiled food (or that’s what I was told when I volunteered at one.)

Can the people who should have been visiting you come over and pick a bundle up from your doorstep? I personally would be fine to take something from an UNCLEAN house because I'm really not fussed about fomites.

Thank you! Going to see what we can do with It all. Makes sense to do a big meal plan. Bloody typical isn't it?

Hope DH gets better soon and isn't too poorly.

I wonder whether there is anyone locally stuck at home because of a covid +ve who would love some Christmas dinner taken round and, being +ve themself, specifically would n't mind that there is someone with covid in the house?

Maybe you could really make someone's Xmas?

(you could ask the local church, or on local Facebook etc if you want?)

SilverRingahBells · 23/12/2021 14:43

And this is why we've organised the last two Christmases around the principle of "the person with the largest household buys the food and brings it to the place where it will be eaten". It may be inconvenient to drag it cross country but if it all goes tits up at least the turkey is in the place where it's most likely to be eaten.
However that doesn't help you if you've got four sets of couples coming round OP, or if the largest family is coming by public transport or not arriving until 1pm.

We’re the opposite, we’ve bought all our Christmas dinner stuff and have just been invited to friends’ 😂. Will take what’s needed with us and have the rest another day.
