What do you do if lft is still positive after day 10?

Dh was delighted at the news this morning that isolation could end after 7 days if you had two negative lft results. Today was day 7 for him and he’s hardly had any symptoms at all. He did his lft and was gutted that it showed the faintest of lines so has had to stay in isolation.
What happens if you still test positive after day 10? Are you free to go out or do you keep isolating?

I believe you are free to go. Positives can show for up to 3 months.

PurpleDaisies · 22/12/2021 19:06

You stop testing and don’t test again for 90 days unless you get symptoms

LunarEclipseWinterSolstice · 22/12/2021 19:06

Actually just ignore what I said, sorry. I wasn't aware the rules had changed.

Where are the details of the rule change?

As far as I can see, there’s nothing on gov.uk saying you need to continue isolating past the ten days of your lft is still positive.

That doesn’t say you stay in past ten days if you’re testing positive.

PurpleDaisies · 22/12/2021 19:12

In fact, that link says isolation ends with no test required

What do you do if lft is still positive after day 10?
Gingerbreadrules · 22/12/2021 19:15

The only reason for continuing to isolate after 10 days is if you have a temperature or sickness. If you still have a cough or other symptoms it's fine. According to test and trace.

Lokdok · 22/12/2021 19:16

Lateral flow tests show positive only when you’re contagious. The news is disappointing for most because LFTs are usually positive until day 9, but if people tested early then they might get out on day 7 now. Only PCRs show positive for up to 90 days, this is about LFTs.

The advice from test and trace is not to use either for 90 days since you’ve had covid.

Where does it say you need to test on day 10 and stay home if positive?

This is nonsense
humdingle · 22/12/2021 19:41

@PurpleDaisies you don't need to test on day 10 at all. You're free to go out (as long as no fever)

Ahhhhhbisto · 22/12/2021 19:45

It's so strange though! My DS is on day 12, out of isolation and tested positive on lateral flow today. I am day 8 and still positive. I obviously will not break isolation but what is the difference?!

AD80 · 22/12/2021 19:52

You can still leave isolation after 10 days, even if there is a line. Sometimes it can be positive for a while. It really depends! I know someone who was totally asymptomatic with covid (detested due to regularly testing as close contact) and tested positive for weeks after on a lft

So yes he can come out of isolation after day 10, just not before. Dd is the same. She's on day 8, she still has a line 😪

To add, Dd still has a line but she's been totally asymptomatic. I'm on day 10 with lingering symptoms - sinus pain etc and negative on lft.

@Lokdok sorry, this is nonsense.

Exactly! I’ve been saying that al along.

Why is he testing? He should have been told not to,

Do you have a cite for this or is it all your own work?

Sorry, it is not. What are you talking about? The guidance on this is crystal clear.

Lokdok · 22/12/2021 20:12

It’s all freely available for everyone to read on gov.uk and the ZOE study.

PurpleDaisies · 22/12/2021 20:12

What exactly are you saying @Lokdok?

I wonder if we’re all talking at cross purposes.

Thank you, that diagram makes it clear that after day 10 no test is required.

I don’t really understand it though...surely if a line is still showing on day 11 you could still be infectious? And wasn’t the previous guidance not to use lfts for 3 months after a confirmed pcr positive? So confusing.
