Very good news for some families.

Brilliant for vulnerable kids and their families.

I could weep, though, that the rest of us yet again won’t be given a choice that parents in so many countries are getting.

Another year of disrupted schooling, and for my kids even longer locked out of being able to see their extended family including their grandparents, because our vaccine rules will lag so far behind others’ and border restrictions will fuck them over yet again.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 22/12/2021 13:37

Very good news but no mention of vulnerable households. I'm hoping they do the same as the initial 12-15 rollout (but better managed!)

Justajot · 22/12/2021 13:44

Couldn't agree more with JassyRadlett. I'm pleased they are vaccinating vulnerable DC, but they all need to be vaccinated to stop them being such a quagmire of covid.

I wish we could even get our DC vaccinated privately. We would love for our DC not to have another year of disrupted education and to be able to fly on holiday. Not letting our kids get on with their lives isn't in their best interest.

Sirzy · 22/12/2021 13:48

It’s a start but now it’s been shown to be safe then it should be on offer for all over 5s. Everyone should have the choice if it’s right for them

JemimaPyjamas · 22/12/2021 13:49

I strongly suspect they will also be offering vaccinations for non-vulnerable children in that age group very soon. They seem to be doing it in other countries already.

nether · 22/12/2021 13:53

In other age groups they have counted household of CEV and immune suppressed was CV, so fingers crossed they will do it for this age group too.

Sleepyblueocean · 22/12/2021 13:54

The roll out for the 12-15 vulnerable group was chaotic. I doubt it will be any better for the 5-11 age group.

I really hope so - but at what point? How much more disruption? And how much harm will JCVI do to confidence in vaccines in the meantime?

Their performance on teenagers was shameful.

emsmaman · 22/12/2021 13:56

IIRC @JassyRadlett is a fellow Aussie. Whilst our birth country are starting with this age group in Jan, it makes our hope of seeing family recede further into the distance. International borders to my home state are due to open up early next year but unless my primary aged children are vaccinated in line with the Australian children of the same age, it seems unlikely they will be allowed in. It's nearly 3 years since we have seen my family so selfishly I would really like them to hurry up and give us a choice.

mrshoho · 22/12/2021 14:00

Yes I was about to say by the time they get it organised for vulnerable it will be offered to all in that age group. That's what happened here with previous roll outs.

JassyRadlett · 22/12/2021 14:00

Solidarity, @emsmaman. It’s shite, isn’t it? My family are all in Queensland so zero hope of a relaxed approach to borders there.

I’ve long been critical of JCVI and their approach to chickenpox vaccine in kids which doesn’t draw on the huge mass of evidence from other countries. Their lack of transparency on their decisions for teenagers just cemented that. Why aren’t we asking ourselves why our vaccines body is so out of step with most other similar countries, and what that means for us?

rainrainraincamedowndowndown · 22/12/2021 14:01

Better than nothing, but I really think they should give all the parents a choice to get their children vaccinated if they want to, like other countries.

x2boys · 22/12/2021 14:08

I wonder who they class as vulnerable ?
My son has severe autism and learning disabilities and an underlying rare chromosome disorder ,although he's physically healthy a lot of children at his special schools are very vulnerable is on oxygen and tube fed etc ,he's 12 in may anyway ,.

Those with learning disabilities were included for the 12-15 year olds when it was vulnerable only at the start. I believe my 10 year old with asd and learning disability should be entitled if it goes through.
PastMyBestBeforeDate · 22/12/2021 15:27

:) DS is included and my 15 year old will get a booster.

Sirzy · 22/12/2021 15:30

Just seen the boosters bit. That’s good Ds is just 12 so has only had one so far but good to know he can be boosted too

JassyRadlett · 22/12/2021 15:47

That’s better than I thought… no decision on wider rollout and quite right that the vulnerable kids should go first. And great on boosters for older teens.

elliejjtiny · 22/12/2021 16:00

@x2boys my 15 year old who has aspergers syndrome was offered a 2nd covid jab when they were only giving them to vulnerable children his age so your ds should get one. I'll be so relieved when my autistic 7 year-old can have his jab as he really struggles with social distancing. At home I can usually control who he hugs etc but at school he and his friend who is also autistic keep licking each other's faces.

flapjackfairy · 22/12/2021 16:04

Oh please God let it be true . Our extremely vulnerable 7 yr old would be able to have some sort of life again and we could actually stop holding our breath as we have been for nearly 2 yrs now.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 22/12/2021 16:12

It's true flapjack :) Happy Christmas from the JCVI!

herecomesthsun · 22/12/2021 16:15

I'm interested in boosters for vulnerable younger teens Grin - that's good news for us!

Geamhradh · 22/12/2021 16:40

Good news and not before time.
I'm in Italy and our cases are obviously mainly in primary schools, in my area they haven't closed, but they've certainly hobbled towards Christmas.
Our 5-12s are being vaccinated shortly after Christmas in a mass rollout so hopefully they can have a rest of school year with relatively little disruption.
Good about the boosters too.
Happy Christmas one and all Xmas Smile

flapjackfairy · 22/12/2021 18:57

@PastMyBestBeforeDate
There have been so many rumours I cannot believe it. Happy Christmas indeed.
