I have come to the conclusion that the pub is the safest place to be...

Sad

I don't have big plans for Christmas Day so am more or less carrying on as usual, lots of hand washing, masks and an effort to keep a distance, but still out and about, making the most of it while we can.

I went to the pub last night. A large "cheap" pub, usually full of fairly rowdy drunks and a lot of young people.

Last night there was our (vastly depleted) group and two others.

I understand why and of course people must do what is right for them, but it's very sad to see in the week before Christmas. Also a little surprising that his particular demographic is being so cautious.

I'm going out for breakfast in a minute. Seems likely to be safer than going to work or the supermarket and I'm treating it as a charitable act to help keep these businesses going.

FWIW I am testing prior to any and all outings.

I'm going out for dinner tonight. Will be interesting to see how busy it is.

Abraxan · 22/12/2021 09:09

We went out for dinner with friends yesterday.
Restaurant is normally packed. It was about a third full, if that. We were able to keep our table all night too whereas in the last you sometimes have to give it up after a couple of hours for a second sitting.

Porcupineintherough · 22/12/2021 09:26

I skipped going to my walking group's Christmas meal last week. Apparently the restaurant was half empty but half of the group have now tested positive anyway. My reward for staying home is ds2 catching it at school, so our Christmas plans are cancelled anyway. At this point I think people should just do what they are comfortable with and not count on anything being without infection risk tbh.

RestingStitchFace · 22/12/2021 12:55

Ironically, went to Boots to pick up a prescription yesterday and felt incredibly unsafe. Massive massive queues as half their staff are off sick, and lots of people breaking rules and not wearing masks.

Pixiedown123 · 22/12/2021 12:58

The gym has been absolutely dead last week and this week. Feels very safe

MrsFrisbyMouse · 22/12/2021 13:02

Not really. Most cases of transmission I am hearing about have been from small groups meeting up. Mind you I am in London and its pretty much everywhere right now. On a bus yesterday and lots of coughing and spluttering going in. I felt very happy that I was wearing a more protective mask than usual!!

hamstersarse · 22/12/2021 13:19

Pubs always have been very safe

Very little of the pandemic has happened in pubs in terms of transmission

Not the same story for hospitals and care homes.

gogohm · 22/12/2021 13:22

We are out today and tomorrow for dinner, not expecting crowds

RoyalFamilyFan · 22/12/2021 13:24

We went out last night for a pub meal. It is a large pub. There were about 15 other people in the pub. We had a whole section to ourselves. Felt way safer than the supermarket.

Porcupineintherough · 22/12/2021 13:24

Umm that might be because pubs have been shut during lots of COVID peaks @hamstersarse. I can certainly remember some spectacular pub-related outbreaks from summer 2020

RoyalFamilyFan · 22/12/2021 13:25

@hamstersarse I am not convinced that is true. Crowded pubs are perfect for transmission. But the point is that pubs at the moment are not crowded.

This was the Matt cartoon in the Telegraph.

I think it's meant to be a joke about him going to the pub to hide from his wife (or 'er indoors' as it used to be). But they can't really make those jokes these days. So it just falls a bit flat.

I don't think it is, it's a comment on how pubs are this week - exactly like that.

I had breakfast on an enclosed terrace overlooking the sea, seafront busy with people walking, beautiful day, you'd usually be waiting for a table, the place was less than a third full Sad

I’d say that cartoon is about how quiet the pubs are.

It’s sad. We’re going out as much as we can.

ifonly4 · 22/12/2021 14:55

We met with friends in a large pub two weeks ago (afternoon/teatime). We were the only people on the lower level - surprisingly as Cheltenham races was on and racegoers are normally piling in the pubs at teatime. DH went for a walk Sunday, he popped in the pub just in case there was a table well away from others, to find he was the only one - very sad as they'd normally be full serving food.

Head for The Winchester and wait for it all to blow over...excellent plan Grin!

We're off out for dinner tonight, so interested to see what it's like (restaurant that's normally very popular).

I wonder how much is down to people being cautious vs huge numbers ill at the same time. So many people we know have come down with it recently, after avoiding it all this time.

KloppKrazy · 22/12/2021 17:33

Matt hits the mark as usual.
It's the quietest place in town.

KloppKrazy · 22/12/2021 17:34

And op too of course!

Treaclepie19 · 22/12/2021 18:40

Thinking about it, we went for a meal today and it wasn't as busy as normal.
I went with a friend on Saturday night and all the pubs were full though.
