How are UK ONS counting covid hospitalisations?

Just reading the ONS UK stats on Covid www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/conditionsanddiseases/articles/coronaviruscovid19latestinsights/hospitals

looks like hospitalisations are 9 x lower than the peak, but cases much higher.

Hospitalisation of 85+ have decreased but hospitalisations of youngest people have increased (however still represent a small % of cases in hospital).

I wondered if this is just because a “hospitalisation” counts if the person has covid, so a 6 year old is there with broken arm, but is positive for covid, therefore counts as a covid hospitalisation?

Logically, as cases are soaring, more under 10s who are in hospital will test positive and therefore add to these stats?

AIBU reasonable to ask what is even the point of tracking hospitalisations in this way?? Surely makes much more sense to just record patients who are in hospital because of covid?
