How long after close contact did you test positive?

My parents were a close contact for covid on Thursday. The did a PCR on Saturday and it was negative so are now, within the rules, going back about their business (they are triple vaccinated).

They have LF tests and have been doing them every day, they have asked to have my DC for lunch tomorrow. I'm ok with this but DH a bit unsure.

If you tested positive after a close contact how long did it take?

I tested positive 8 days after 1 daughter and 6 days after the other tested positive. Not sure which i caught it from.

Ihearthosesleighbellsringing · 21/12/2021 16:42

I tested positive 3 days after my son did. He was positive on Thursday and I got mine on Sunday

blissfulllife · 21/12/2021 16:45

5 days for me

SandysMam · 21/12/2021 16:51

Incubation is said to be between 5 and 14 days (at a push) so not out of the woods yet. I wouldn’t risk it, they could easily test positive in the coming days.

FenceSplinters · 21/12/2021 17:00

Six days.

SergeiL · 21/12/2021 17:01

I tested positive 14 and 10 days after the rest of the family did.

Vintagegoth · 21/12/2021 17:01

DH spent time with someone on a Saturday who later tested positive. Pinged by test and trace on Tuesday. Daily LFTs. Positive LFT on Thursday. Confirmed by PCR.

LadyCleathStuart · 21/12/2021 17:11

Interesting replies - for those of you who had longer periods, did you live with the positive case? I'm just thinking of ongoing exposure vs someone being in your house for 15 mins who then later tests positive.

Yeah in fairness I was living with the close contacts so a different situation. We don’t know where we got it from though. Most likely source was 4 days before the first positive case in the household but could be 5 days or more based on known case contact.

It’s such a bloody worry isn’t it.

jenkel · 21/12/2021 17:16

I caught it first, no idea how, took dh a further 6 days for positive lft, though was getting cold symptons before that, positive pcr day 7.

AD80 · 21/12/2021 17:17

Dp tested positive 3 days after contact with someone at work.

I caught it off Dp and it took 8 days to get it despite that we didn't really isolate form each other. So he was nearly out of isolation, when I started.

It can change quickly. Dp was negative on pcr one day and positive on lft then pcr the very next day.

LadyCleathStuart · 21/12/2021 17:36

Hmm thanks everyone. Yes, such a worry. I don't want to avoid them totally over Christmas as there is a chance that they won't get it at all. But then there is the chance they will and I don't want us to be stuck home for 10 days.

Maybe as long as the keep up with the LF's I will just let the kids go. I mean they could have been sitting next to someone at school who had positives at home and we would never have known.

DS tested positive for covid on 24th November. No symptoms other than headache and tired. Isolated for 10 days then back to school. Last week started feeling poorly and developed nasty cough yesterday. I know that LFT can show as positive for up to 90 days after infection but we are due to see elderly relatives at Christmas and am worried he's got it again and we won't know for sure? WWYD? Would a PCR be more reliable at telling if it's a "new" infection?

I'd have said their test was done too early tbh. The least I've heard of people testing positive after a contact has been 3 days...

youretwistingmymelonman · 21/12/2021 18:58

Within 2 days. I'm pretty sure we've all had Omicron and writhing 2 days for each adult.

KarlUrbansWife · 21/12/2021 18:59

In this situation, it's up to the people who are potentially being put at risk- in this case you, DH and DC. If DH isn't comfortable with it then it's a no go I'm afraid.
But I do love your username, @LadyCleathStuart. Those books always have me howling with laughter.

5 days

Downtonbabby · 21/12/2021 19:05

We had contact at a party on Saturday and my DS tested positive on the Tuesday afternoon on a LFT and I tested positive on LFT on the Wednesday. We also PCR tested my DD on the Wednesday and we all tested positive, but her LFT wasn’t positive until a few days later and her symptoms were also later.

If they don’t want to spread covid then they need to isolate. I appreciate that they are technically acting within the rules but if they want to keep their family safe they need to do another PCR test at the end of the incubation period to be sure they’re not infected.

I din't see anything official saying this so yes they are acting within the rules. They are doing daily LF tests as this was recommended at the testing site.

I can't see many people isolating for 10 days if they don't have to.

2 days.

On a Saturday morning I had brunch in an igloo/ dome with 3 friends (one of whom had a child at home with covid). By Monday evening both me and the mother of the infected child had symptoms and positive LFTs.

The other two women tested positive the next day.
