Self isolation for hospital procedure

user6734571 · 20/12/2021 23:14

I am having a scan next month and have been told over the phone by the hospital I will need to self isolate for 14 days before. I know people isolate before operation but didn’t realise you had to before certain hospital procedures.

Yeahb dh had just had to for a ct scan no 13 days though I think was more like 3. He had to have a pcr and then isolate x

deeplybaffled · 20/12/2021 23:31

I had a colonoscopy last week and had to do a PCR 3 days beforehand and was told then to isolate until the procedure. 14 days sounds excessive!

dustandfluf · 20/12/2021 23:33

What type of scan is it?

ilovecherries · 20/12/2021 23:38

I was PCR then three days isolation for surgery on my nose (which was then cancelled at the last minute anyway Angry.

Fleemeister · 20/12/2021 23:40

I have done for a couple of procedures. A PCR followed by 3 days isolation though, not 14!

It makes sense we need to keep NHS staff as protected as possible. I'm surprised they can't do it with PCR and smaller isolation though.

Scarby9 · 21/12/2021 00:27

14 days for a scan? That does sound a lot. What are they scanning?!

PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 21/12/2021 00:31

Had call from hospital today. Ddad having a procedure on the 30th. PCR booked for 27th after which he has to isolate. Told to socially distance and limit contact for 10 days prior.

Silkieschickens · 21/12/2021 00:39

Going through cancer treatment and am isolating all time anyway as treatment can be delayed a lot if get covid but scans no isolation and surgery 3 days, quite a few have 14 days isolation prior think it depends how you are risk assessed.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 21/12/2021 06:24

Different hospitals have different requirements for different procedures.

But yes, you can be required to self isolate. It's very important to keep some areas as 'clean' as possible, to keep the hospital running and all the patients (which will include very vulnerable people) as safe as possible

If the timing does not work for you, then can you ask to reschedule the scan?

Neck

No mention of needing a PCR just to isolate for 14 days

@user6734571 what kind of scan is it!? MRI, CT, Ultrasound?

daisypond · 21/12/2021 19:39

I’ve had surgery twice in the last month with general anaesthetic, plus various MRIs and other scans. I only had to isolate for three days prior to the surgeries - after a PCR test done at hospital- and not at all for the MRIs, blood tests and other imaging.

I work in a hosp, 2 week iso for an ultra sound is beyond weird. Our iso period for TCI (ops) is 2 days. I'd ring and double check

ok thank you i will phone tomorrow

Is it normal to isolate before an ultrasound, I have had one before and didn't isolate then. The person I spoke to on the phone said I had to isolate because I would be removing my mask.

I had to isolate for a week for a treadmill test, then it was cancelled on the day and rescheduled for the week after so I had to reisolate. I'm NHS, so all my own patients had to be cancelled for two weeks. No one was happy.

daisypond · 21/12/2021 20:00

I had an ultrasound today. Doctor (hospital) decided there and then, and I had it 15 minutes later. Definitely no self-isolation.

Lovemusic33 · 21/12/2021 20:07

Should be a PCR test 3 days before and isolate after PCR? That’s what I had to do (before surgery and before another procedure).

santabetterwashhishands · 21/12/2021 20:10

My daughters having a minor procedure done on the 30th of this month. She has to have a pcr test on the 27th and isolate which is much more reasonable than a long isolation.

dustandfluf · 22/12/2021 17:35

I work in radiography, which covers xray, ultrasound and antenatal. We've never told anyone they need to isolate for a scan. We don't even ask for lateral flow tests to be done. I'd ring and query this again with the department.

dollybird · 22/12/2021 18:42

MIL had a cataract op on Monday. PCR on Friday then isolate till Monday.

FuzzyPuffling · 22/12/2021 19:07

I had a hospital procedure last Thursday. I was sent a PCR that had to be returned to a local hospital by 10am Monday. I was then asked to isolate "as per the instructions in my appointment letter", of which there were precisely none.

I was good and isolated anyway.

AD80 · 22/12/2021 19:11

14 days is insane. They cannot expect people to do that surely? I get the reason but most people have to work and have other commitments.

When I had a small op a while ago (day surgery so no overnight stay). I had to get a test 3 days before and isolate for those 3 days.

dalrympy · 22/12/2021 19:23

DD had major op on Thursday and had to do PCR 3 days before and then isolate.

I was on the ward with her for the whole 5 days and wasn't asked to isolate or test at any point. 🤷🏻‍♀️
