Is this common? I had my first dose of moderna an hour ago and now I have a rash appearing across face and neck which is very itchy

www.gov.uk/government/publications/regulatory-approval-of-covid-19-vaccine-moderna/information-for-uk-recipients-on-covid-19-vaccine-moderna

Leaflet says:
Get urgent medical attention if you get any of the following signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction:

feeling faint or light-headed
changes in your heartbeat
shortness of breath
wheezing
swelling of your lips, face, tongue or throat
hives or rash
nausea or vomiting
stomach pain

Sorry to be alarming but that is just the text from the leaflet.

My mum had this with Pfizer. She had to take anti-histamines and put a cream on, Anthisan or similar.

The GP said it was a listed side effect (of Pfizer anyway).

It does also say:

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

Diarrhoea
Rash
Rash, redness, or hives at the injection site (some of which may occur at a median of 4 to 11 days after the injection)

So I guess it depends which category your rash falls into. But may be best not to ignore as quite early?

Although the less worrying on is at the 'vaccination site'.

I would get some advice.

Sorry you felt panicked, I assume most are not serious reactions but it is wise to check. How are you getting on now - did 111 advise?
Kilopapadelta · 20/12/2021 21:43

Spoke to 111 who said that the location of the rash and how quickly it appeared indicates an allergic reaction. I found some strong antihistamines in my cupboard that I got for an insect bite back in the summer and took one whilst I waited for the nurse to call back which has taken the rash and heat away from my face and neck. They said to keep an eye out for the obvious breathing/swelling symptoms but touch wood that seems to have done the trick!
I was very panicked because when I was 7 I had a seizure at the dentist when they gave me a local anaesthetic but my mum didn’t follow it up or make a note of what triggered it at the time, so I sometimes worry that I am allergic to something medical that I don’t know the full details of!

I am really glad you are feeling a bit better after the AH.

Take it easy now, hopefully you are over it. You will presumably have to have a different vaccine next time?

Hope youa re a bit less stressed now Brew
