Working with colleague who's son has covid

Would you want to work with someone who's son lives at home and has covid?
I really don't want to and think he should be staying off work...not because he has to, but because if he gets it and passes it on it'll ruin mine and other colleagues Christmas' too. Retail food industry.
Am I being precious or should I just get on with it and hope for the best?

Unfortunately this is the way it is now. If your colleague is double jabbed and they don't have symptoms then they go into work. I've got Covid at the moment and my DS still has to go into work even though he's a close contact. He has to do an LFT each day and show proof of a negative result. I must admit it makes me nervous and also my DS as we so don't want to pass it on!

ComtesseDeSpair · 20/12/2021 17:59

Are you going to pay his wages for the time he takes off? If not then you’re being unreasonable to expect him to do so, when the guidance is clear that vaccinated adults no longer have to isolate if close contacts.

If you work in retail then you’re just as much at risk of catching it from customers, whose health of vaccination status you have no idea about. Did you consider taking ten days off yourself ahead of Christmas, to minimise the risk?

What choice does he have though? Phone in sick and probably be unpaid if retail plus its dishonest, ask for unpaid leave- unlikely to be granted at the busiest time of year same as an annual leave request.

PeterPomegranate · 20/12/2021 18:04

It’s not his fault. Those are the rules now. I doubt he can afford to take unpaid time off any more than you or I can.

Exactly this - my DS works in retail and after finishing Uni this year and little hope of him finding his 'career job' at the moment he needs to keep his job. He spoke to his employer as soon as I had a positive lateral flow but they said he had to go in.

Try working in a school.

Vodkaandgingerale · 20/12/2021 18:14

You're all right... I am being precious. Bloody crap though. 😑

Exactly! That's where I got mine from. 12 out of our 15 staff have come down with it since Friday!

I'm a teacher - my 17year old dd was really ill with it, I was still expected to be in work every day and just had to do a pcr test.

Exhausteddog · 20/12/2021 18:29

My son had covid last month. I tried to wfh as much as possible but I did have to go in to work some days. I wore a mask and let colleagues know. Some clients chose not to come in. I did 2 pcr tests and several lfts.

Whathefisgoingon · 20/12/2021 18:30

This has happened a few times at my work. Drives me mental because the job can be done from home.

Disneyblueeyes · 20/12/2021 18:30

Yep you're being precious.
It is shit though, but normal now unfortunately.

Wizzbangfizz · 20/12/2021 18:36

You are being OTT - just crack on with it, you will be fine.
