Since April I’ve been doing an LFT test twice a week because I work in a school. Touch wood I’ve not caught Covid yet, but around me people are dropping like flies. For context pretty much everyone I work with either has it or has had it over the last few weeks and I’m one of the very few people who hasn’t. I’m due to spend Christmas with parents, brother and sister in law and their baby.

Yesterday my mum told me she didn’t want to me to do any LFTs this week ‘in case you have Covid and we have to cancel Christmas’. I would never forgive myself if I had it and gave it to someone else in the family. I also know my brother and sister in law are still doing their LFTs although I’m not sure that she’s aware of that. Last week my Dad had to have a PCR test as he had a heavy cold and she was more bothered that would mean we would have to cancel Xmas than the fact he was really unwell (bedridden for two days).

I should point out that my mum has always had extremely high expectations regarding Christmas and always goes to town and expects us to dress up in our best clothes and take part in tables games etc She then plasters photos of it all over social media for everyone to give her the the validation she desperately requires 🙄 I think she’s being fucking stupid and selfish personally, but my gut is telling me to carry on however I know she’ll hir the roof if happen to have a positive test!

WWYD?

Thank you all. I’ve just done an LFT. I don’t feel unwell and pretty certain there is nothing wrong with me, but I wouldn’t forgive myself if did and made anyone else unwell.

Don’t go along with things you know are wrong. Your opinion on what you should do is more valid than hers.

cookiemonster2468 · 20/12/2021 17:58

Ignore her and test, she is being ridiculous and could be putting people's lives at risk with that kind of stupidity.

Foolsrule · 20/12/2021 18:12

Good grief! It’s people like your mum who are causing the numbers to skyrocket! Not testing doesn’t mean you don’t have it. The more I hear people say this, the more it makes me think of AIDS/HIV and the ignorance isn’t bliss campaign.

Do the test then tell her after.

If she kicks off, point out that by testing you are also protecting the kids in your care, your colleagues etc.

BHX3000 · 20/12/2021 18:26

Test. And tell her your (early) New Years resolution is to not appear on social media anymore. So any photos she takes can’t be uploaded unless you’re not in them. That’ll piss her right off Grin

And my parents are cancelling Christmas anyway even with the reassurance that we'll all do lfts and make sure we're negative before meeting!!!! So many different approaches to this....

Bogofftosomewherehot · 21/12/2021 05:41

You're an adult. You no longer have to do what mummy says. Do the right thing and test. Please protect your family rather than join in with the social media circus. It's a shame she's more about appearances than her family's health. Others are probably hitting a quick "like" and just scrolling on anyway.

mummabubs · 21/12/2021 09:24

100% keep testing x

AnnaMagnani · 21/12/2021 09:30

Test anyway. Also best time to test is immediately before meeting up with people as you can be negative in the morning and positive later.

So ideally all of you meeting for Christmas should be doing an LFT just before everyone sets out.

Lastly - tell your mum a lot less about your life. She doesn't need to know whether you test or not, what's on your social media, just get on with your life.

GutsInMay · 21/12/2021 09:39

Good decision, OP, don’t get sucked into the crazy.

Her Christmas would not be ‘ruined’, with luck she would still have plenty of non-infected family around her

She has absolutely no right to make that request given the new baby. She has no right to make decisions or demands that impact your brother’s family. Bloody hell!

Keep your critical faculties honed!

emmathedilemma · 21/12/2021 09:43

Test

Thewiseoneincognito · 21/12/2021 09:44

Your mum is delusional, bless her. She’s probably scared too because she knows how high risk she is, a lot of older folk don’t understand this new world we’re living in and that’s how it’s so dangerous for them.

Do the test.

Marianne1234 · 21/12/2021 10:28

I understand where she’s coming from 🤷🏻‍♀️ not saying she’s necessarily correct. But I’m not that keen on this idea that we must all go searching for it.
