I’ve had covid twice & surprisingly, it didn’t effect my asthma either time. I have moderate asthma, it’s not the easiest to get under control. I’m someone who just a mild cold flares it up badly. I’ve got a stinking cold now (negative PCR) & I’m coughing away and feeling very sore chested 🤦🏼‍♀️

But covid, nothing. It didn’t go to my chest either time. I was really surprised! But if you look at the stats around covid & asthma, asthmatics are actually less likely to get seriously ill with it. There’s some suggestion that the medication we take actually helps prevent it. And certainly reports I’ve heard from those I know & online, it does seem that way for a lot of people (obviously won’t be everyone)..

I'm asthmatic and had Covid in August. At the time I was double jabbed (pfizer).

I take Fostair 100/6 and Montelukast. My peak flow is normally 380. When I tested positive I increased my Fostair dose in line with my asthma action plan. My peak flow was generally 420-440 when I was reporting my readings to the Covid Monitoring Service so better than normal, but I assume the extra inhaler puffs helped that!

I did develop a secondary chest infection in the second week and needed a course of antibiotics. It wasn't a bad chest infection - the last one I had in Nov 2019 needed two courses of antibiotics to shift and I needed prednisone to help control my asthma. The Covid one was much milder. Colds and flu usually have a worse effect on my asthma in terms of chest tightness and shortness of breath.

So aside from the chest infection, my asthma wasn't really affected. I felt awful though and had 7 weeks off work followed by a phased return.

It's worth getting a peak flow meter and pulse oximeter in if you're asthmatic though and don't have them already. It was very reassuring to be able to check my oxygen sats and peak flow when I was unwell.

@IWishTheBishopWell that's great that your asthma was ok? What was your symptoms of covid if it wasn't chest issues? That's it u don't mind me asking? Was u able to do normal task?

Yes, my daughter. Her peak flow read higher on Day 6 of Covid and has remained stronger and better peak flow results.

We mentioned it to the asthma nurse last week and apparently this seems to be quite common!

Symptoms were initially like a cold - headache, sinus pain, sneezing and a runny nose and the sniffles. As the cold symptoms eased the cough began and that was hideous, I was coughing for about 8 weeks in the end and coughing lots. I had to have chest xrays etc. as I had chest pain (it turned out to be strain from all the coughing). When I had the chest infection my chest had that slightly heavy feeling I get with chest infections and my cough was a little chesty for a while instead of dry.

I also felt generally run down and very fatigued. I had a UTI in late August which developed into a kidney infection which took two courses of antibiotics to shift. I had regular UTIs after that.

I couldn't work but I could do light non strenuous things like reading or watching tv. Over time I was able to build myself up to short walks, nipping to the corner shop for bread etc.

I'm pretty much back to normal now but still getting the UTIs although I've always been prone to them. The cough and the fatigue were the worst aspects overall.

This is a lovely thing to read. I, and both our DCs have chronic asthma and so this has been worrying me.

My sone is 10, his asthma wasn't affected when he had covid.

Son! I don't know where the random e came from.

I have asthma and had covid twice pre- vaccines. I got the covid cough which lasted a few weeks but my asthma wasn’t really made worse by it and I wasn’t seriously ill either time.

CatAlice · 20/12/2021 14:43

I have asthma and while I had covid quite badly my asthma wasn't an issue.
I take part in a research program and they recently published findings that suggest people with allergic conditions and particularly those who have asthma as well, may have a lower risk of covid.

My asthma has all but disappeared since I had covid. At my follow up appointment with the respiritory consultant he couldn't really explain it.
