Diabetes and covid

On the day I did a lateral flow (faint positive) I'd been to see my mum. She's type one diabetic, she has been jabbed and had her booster a few weeks ago...she's cleaned everywhere I went in the house but is understandably really worried.
Can anyone give any reassurance? Is it possible she won't get it? I didn't go near her whilst there

It’s very possible she won’t get it and Diabetes uk have said that those with t1 are no more at risk than anyone else, so chances are if she does it will be mild.

Apart from the usual infection impacting blood sugars and being alert to that, there is no reason to worry.

DD1 has Type 1 diabetes, she got Covid in August and neither me nor DH (also Type 1) caught it. We were pretty ruthless about her isolating in her room, though Grin

DD was not particularly ill, very tired, but achey but never close to needing a doctor, let alone hospital.

Try not to worry too much, OP Flowers

Ds is Type 1 diabetic and we all got Covid in February. I was really worried because he also has other conditions which mean that he would not cope alone in hospital and also can't tell us how he feels. I contacted my diabetes team and they talked me down. They were great.

Basically, T1 diabetics need to watch out for ketones . I was sent 'sick day rules' which involved large amounts of insulin to keep blood glucose levels down. You need to make sure you have a ketone meter (which my GP provided, but you can get them on Amazon) and strips. DS's blood glucose went really high for a few days and required lots of insulin and lots of testing, but he didn't have ketones .

I also bought a pulse oximeter to keep an eye on his oxygen levels since he can't tell us how he is feeling. In the end he had fairly mild symptoms, thank God, but it did play havoc with his blood sugar.
