How does it work if you've had covid recently...

...and then someone else in your house gets it?
Four of us (me, DH, DS13, DD15) had covid a month ago. DD17 didn't but has just tested positive from a LFT and has mild symptoms 😭.
We've cancelled all our Christmas hosting plans and DD is isolating in her room 😞.
DH and I were due our boosters this week but will need to cancel them now.

But any guidance I've read about what to do if you're in close contact focuses on testing. We were told we can't test for 90 days after having had covid. We've ordered DD1 a PCR but assume there's no point the rest of us getting one? DD2 had cold symptoms last week but tested negative and DH had cold symptoms this morning - how would we know if we catch covid again?

We weren't planning on doing anything social now this week but weren't going to strictly isolate eg would go out to buy milk etc.

Technically we don't need to isolate but Sage is recommending it - but if we can't test for another 2 months, how would we know if we'd caught it again? 🤔 have I misunderstood the guidance?

We're in an almost identical situation, and I've wondered this too. It would be good to find some proper guidance

How come you can't have your booster?

Goodwordguide · 20/12/2021 08:38

I thought you couldn't have a booster if you've been in close contact? Is that not the case? I may have misunderstood...

You can have a booster 28 days after covid. It doesn’t matter if you’ve got a close contact positive as long as you don’t have symptoms or a positive test yourself.

PammieDooveOrangeJoof · 20/12/2021 08:41

When I had my booster the other day there were no questions about being a close contact. They just asked if I had any symptoms and when I last had covid.

Whistleforthechoir · 20/12/2021 08:46

Same here. Had the booster on Saturday. They asked if I'd had covid in the last 28days, no questions about close contacts.

Let's face it, we'll all be close contacts with someone positive soon at this rate - they're wanting to speed up the boosters, they won't want to increase the number of people who can't get it.

PurpleDaisies · 20/12/2021 08:49

There’s absolutely nothing about not vaccinating contacts in the green book which is the advice all vaccination centres should be following.

As long as you don’t have to isolate according to the local rules, getting a booster is pretty much the best reason you can leave the house.

Goodwordguide · 20/12/2021 08:51

Oh ok - a friend got turned away on Saturday because he'd been in contact with someone (just a work colleague as well). Will go ahead with booster- something to look forward to 🤪

Honestly if you all had it a month ago I wouldn't make her isolate in her room :(

1910username · 20/12/2021 08:53

I would have the booster too and I would be very surprised if you’ve caught it again this early.

A study has come out today saying that those that got Covid after the two vaccinations, have super immunity.

Small study but I think many studies that we read about these days from small case studies as well.

It’s on many newspapers today, but here’s the link to the university that carried it out.

Goodwordguide · 20/12/2021 08:55

She's insisting on isolating - she's a stickler for rules. I'm beyond caring at this point...

OP posts:
Delatron · 20/12/2021 08:57

Yes I was reading about the super immunity this morning (and going it’s true as I have Covid now).

If you’ve all just had Covid it’s a bit miserable making her isolate in her room. Especially over Christmas.

Delatron · 20/12/2021 08:58

Ah just saw your update.

It’s not a rule though. Maybe speak to her.

Goodwordguide · 20/12/2021 09:00

We're not making her isolate - it's her choice, she's 17 so able to make these choices. I'm hoping to tempt her out for Christmas Day at least, if only to cheer me up! And also to stop me having to run back and forth to her room with cups of team and food all day 😏

Goodwordguide · 20/12/2021 09:03

X-ed posts! I suspect there is a part of her that doesn't mind being in bed with the TV and a constant supply of snacks... I'm sure she'll come out when the novelty wears off.

Saying that, DH's parents are v elderly and vulnerable and we do usually see a lot of them (and shop for them etc) so I want to minimise the chances of transmission.

a 17 year old 'choosing to isolate in her room' is so sad - i'd be worried more by her response

Yes you can have boosters

You don't need to isolate in any way.

Neolara · 20/12/2021 09:06

When I had the booster, I explained that my Ds has just tested positive, that I was waiting for PCR results for myself, that I'd tested negative on lf and had no symptoms. They said that was absolutely fine and jabbed me.

Reallybadidea · 20/12/2021 09:10

It does seem that you're much more likely to get infected by omicron even if recently recovered from a different variant. And it's not clear why lft's would be positive for 90 days following infection - they're not really that sensitive. Personally, I'd be doing daily lft's and assuming that they're correct if positive.

steppemum · 20/12/2021 09:12

dd2 and I had covid in October.
dh didn't get in then. He has just had it and dd2 got it again.

She had new symptoms though. We only got her tested because of new symptoms. She had been doing LFT for school and they were all negative.

I have not had any symptoms and I am not getting tested. Technically I am still within the 90 days so might get false positive.

I had my booster last week, while dh and dd2 were still isolating.

Goodwordguide · 20/12/2021 09:13

Well, she feels poorly so is happy to stay in bed. We sit outside her room and call her lots, I think she's fine if a bit fed up. I'm sure she'll emerge for Christmas.

I known it's unlikely we'll get it again but how would we know anyway for the next 2 months if we can't have PCRs?

OP posts:
Goodwordguide · 20/12/2021 09:15

Yes, we have plenty of LFTs, will do those. Thanks all for the replies - hope everyone manages to stay well and have a good Christmas 🎄

If you get new symptoms, you should isolate and do a pcr.

steppemum · 20/12/2021 09:34

LFT will also come up with false positves potentially for 90 days after covid.

Caliexpidocioussuper · 20/12/2021 09:39

At 17 isolating in my bedroom with the TV and a mum bringing me food and drink would be living the dream! If I’d had Covid a month ago I wouldn’t be too worried at all if I were you.

Goodwordguide · 20/12/2021 09:59

😂😂 agree!

She's pretty upset to be honest as we've had to cancel seeing lots of family, plus she was due to work so feels bad at letting her boss down, but what can you do? 🤷‍♀️

Counting my blessings that noone's seriously ill, we've got plenty of Christmas food and drink in etc. I'm always complaining about being too busy, going to try and enjoy this enforced quiet time!
