Needle-free vaccine trials

I know there are a lot of needle phobic people who frequent this board, or maybe have loved ones that have needle phobia.

This is great news, and something to keep an eye on in the coming months.

I know it is not a solution for everyone, but it is a great start.

And might a powder form be easier to transport to countries that need it .
It is good news, thanks for sharing!

Incredible technology, really pleased this is now looking like a viable alternative

That too! No need for the extreme cold temps etc.

Oh that is good news. My needle phobic DD finally steeled herself to get it done at the local walk in centre (40 minute drive away) with her arm loaded up with Emla cream yesterday... only to be turned away and told to come back at 8.30 am today. Which obviously she can't, it'll take a while for her to work up to being able to go again Angry

Saucery · 19/12/2021 19:48

That’s rotten @fahlahlahlahlah Sad
Had they run out of vaccine/ had too big a queue?
I know how much it will have taken your dd to get there and be prepared.

fahlahlahlahlah · 19/12/2021 20:10

I presume one or the other @Saucery - we got there at 4.30 and they were open until 7, but there was quite a big queue. She says she might think about it again in the New Year but it's such a shame as she would have done it yesterday, had it been possible.

Honeyhorse · 19/12/2021 20:12

That’s great news.

I’ve got a needle phobia so it’ll definitely help me.

VikingOnTheFridge · 19/12/2021 20:15

It sounds like a fab initiative.

I think it's going to be a nasal one similar to the flu vaccine. I caught a bit of a late night tv discussion on it. A few doctors where talking about what they had in the pipe line.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 19/12/2021 21:28

That's a brilliant idea. I can't stand the thought of regular boosters but would definitely have them if no needle was involved. I've never understood why adults can't have the nasal flu vaccine

It is a jet injector (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jet_injector) which uses a jet of air to push the vaccine through the skin.

I also found this.

So this is one like the flu nasal spray kids get.

Hopefully there will be further developments soon.

I'm so pleased that this situation is being recognised and addressed as being one of the reasons some people are avoiding the vaccine.

It's funny, I had a bit of a wibble the other day thinking about these needle-free alternatives, thinking that there's no use pursuing this because it doesn't actually help my phobia - I should be continuing to push myself through the actual injection process so that I can learn from it. Then, I had a word with myself and realised that what these new developments will do is give me time and space. They will take away the debilitating fear than makes it almost impossible for me to enter a vaccination centre and will buy me time to work on my phobia so that when I need to face a needle again in future, it will be under more controlled circumstances. I therefore couldn't be more delighted that this is happening.

My only remaining worry is how I get referred through the needle-free channel?
