NHS Christmas Parties

I know two nurses. Well actually I know more but these two have popped up on Facebook today. Both out having a ‘ward’ Christmas party in their local cities. Both is in restaurants, bars & clubs. About 10 people at each event. Not a spot of distancing or mask wearing among them.

I also know a couple doctors. They both had their work Christmas parties on Friday. Again, one was about 12 colleagues (doctors & nurses by the comments) all out in multiple bars. And the other about 20 people at one of those hotel Christmas events where you get a table, food, music etc.

Now I’m thrilled for them that they get to celebrate & have a lovely time. Honestly delighted. I can only imagine how shit it’s been the last couple years.. but the general public is being slammed for considering mixing with anyone indoors, let alone going out clubbing etc! I know so many cancelled parties (thankfully not mine, we got ours in early in December).. if those at the forefront of covid & how terrible it is can party on down, why is everyone else being told our actions are going to cause the NHS to collapse?! 😫

Most HCP's are tested weekly PCRs plus lateral flow tests. Probs the safest people to go out! Also had 3 vaccines!
They are humans and prob working all over Christmas. I didn't attend mine as I'd already had plans! Ive also not long been abroad on holiday! I must be a terrible HCP according to you OP when your exposed to diseases including covid most days as part of your job for 2 years let me know.

I don't know anyone who is berating people for mixing indoors just on Mumsnet!

@MrsHamlet absolutely. I hated the clapping as I thought it would backfire eventually. The hero/angel narrative is destructive.

MrsHamlet · 19/12/2021 13:36

@timtam23 useful to the government though. Heroes don't need paying much and they do it for the vocation.
Anyone who's not in a vocation can have a party.

Good for them I went to 4 Xmas parties and loved it. Stop moralising.

I’m nhs and our Christmas meal was planned in great detail to reduce and mitigate risk. 15 of us going to a large hall, well ventilated, sole use of toilets, one or 2 serving staff. We are all triple vaccinated and we’re going to do LFT before attending. The powers that be cancelled it 2 days before we were due to go. We are all so disappointed, we work together all week, risk would have been practically zero. We will likely still have to pay for it too (£40 per head which is a lot of money to lose) yet we could have all gone down the pub or to a nightclub and that would have been fine as long as we didn’t call it a Christmas night out…Angry

Personally i wouldnt be going out right now. But a christmas party would increase my risk of catching covid so not going makes sense.
For ward staff i think the biggest risk is their workplace so going out likely makes no difference to their risk of catching covid.

Increases risk of lack of medical service if they all get it through but as many people arent worried about the NHS colapse or the stress staff will be under for this new wave they prob think sod it amd want to let hair down while they can

@Whammyyammy

How about I edit the post for you OP.

I have been to my works Christmas party THIS MONTH.

2 of my friends are NHS nurses and were at their Christmas party last night.

I AM outraged by this as I AM a massive hypocrite

I think it's a bit daft to encourgage all staff from the same ward/unit or whatever to go on a multiple venue night out that's also busy with members of the publc. It's increasing the chance of everybody needing to be off at once which would be a disaster for the sake of a night out. A private office party seems safer since they all work together anyway there's little increased risk.
